Neurographic Art - An interesting idea!

A friend of mine in a craft group has attended a class about this. It looks interesting, forging new neural pathways is something I’ve had to do post brain injury. I’m going to give it a go, just wondering if anyone else has heard of it, or tried it?

I’ve found a YouTube tutorial that’s easy to follow.

This is just like something we used to do at school.

riete Sun 26-Jun-22 07:18:49

never heard of this, but it looks like a fun thing to do.
i'm going to see what pens/paints i can find to have a go.
please let us know how you get on with this blossoming. also maybe what other methods you've used to forge new neural pathways.
take care

Wow , this sounds something I would benefit from . New neural pathways , my old ones seem blocked just now . Thankyou for this post, Blossoming .sunshine

Interesting - but it is nothing new, just doodling and concentrating so hard on it that you stop getting wound up about your problems. The result is that you are able to see them more objectively and productively.

Some comments after the video are asking things like "What size of paper should I use?" which brings anxiety back into the equation and misses the whole point.

BlueBelle Sun 26-Jun-22 09:24:23

It’s definitely not new I ve been painting in doodles since school days I remember we use to cover our books in plain paper and I used to circle dot all over them
It’s just an age old technique given a new modern name and held up as something ground breaking ??( and probably making someone a heap of money clever them

Farzanah Sun 26-Jun-22 10:06:08

This looks quite engrossing and would definitely help I imagine in a meditative sense, relaxing and focussing concentration. I used to doodle when listening to lectures, I could remember what was said at certain point in the doodle!
TBH any new skill or language practised regularly for a while will help set up new neural pathways.

Thanks to those leaving positive comments.

I’m aware it’s not new, few things are, but a lot of research has been done into the way our brains recover after injury. Art therapy has produced very good outcomes for many survivors. When a brain injury robs you of so much of yourself then you will try almost anything to regain functions. I guess you have to experience it to understand.

Farzanah Sun 26-Jun-22 10:35:38

I’m sure it must be very difficult Blossoming and it’s encouraging that this has produced good outcomes, and as you say anything that may help towards regaining lost or new brain function can only be positive.
Even those who haven’t suffered brain injury can always benefit from learning new skills. I practice meditation which I find helpful.

Thank you Farzanah

Reite the ability of brains to ‘rewire’ themselves is known as Neuroplasticity. Some of the things that help are puzzles such as cryptic crosswords and sudoku. I like doing the daily Wordles in English and other languages. Learning a new language is very helpful. Physical exercise with repetitive movement is very important if, like me, there is a high degree of paralysis. Dance is great,

Isn’t learning a musical instrument supposed to be good, too?
I’m sure I formed masses of neural pathways when
I took up the piano again after so many decades, and from a very low base anyway, so it was virtually a case of starting again from scratch.

At first there was a slow process - from eye to brain to fingers, e.g. ‘Oh, er, that’s a C and and an F sharp, find those on the keyboard….’

Whereas after a lot of practice there were so many short cuts in place, I didn’t even have to think. At least, not nearly so often.

Well my first attempt was pretty awful grin

I have loads of art materials so am experimenting with mixing different media. Not all experiments are successful, such is life!

I went to a ‘Drop in and Draw’ session at our central library on Friday. Just that - you come, help yourself to pens, pencils, paper - and paint if you want it - and just draw either the items set out in front of you, or anything else you fancy. Not tutored, no experience necessary. No one judging you. Two hours of utterly absorbing quiet pleasure. I hadn’t drawn for ages. My picture was rubbish but it gave me a huge release. I will try that technique, blossoming; the YouTube video looked interesting.

Blossoming Mon 27-Jun-22 18:48:18

That must have been so much fun Greyduster. It’s something we do naturally as children, such a shame that some people try to put others off. No judgement needed, just enjoyment.

I didn't have a great childhood and working in a school ive done so much training on stages of development and how important they are for growing the right neural pathways...

This is actually lovely

I hope that you have conserved it nevertheless.

Could someone do one with just a couple of loops and so very few crossover points?

Would that work?

Ro60 Tue 28-Jun-22 00:09:41

Ooh I wish I wasn't busy tomorrow now. ? Definitely going to do it. The idea of filling in the corners is new to me - yet looks so effective.

StarDreamer I would think a few lines would work - after all, it's Your artwork.

I do art with my GD (10 yrs) - I'm showing her anyone can paint & be artistic. Recently she won a school art competition using techniques we'd tried ?,

This will be out next project, so many thanks Blossoming.

riete Tue 28-Jun-22 01:22:58

thanks for your answer blossoming. food for thought.
i should soon be near a "pen shop", and am quite keen to have a go at this art. never been interesting in the "colouring in" books that so many recommend, but this idea looks like fun.
i don't suppose i'll do any better than you say you did first time, but never mind.

tiredoldwoman Tue 28-Jun-22 07:05:20

I did this yesterday , just a daft taking a line for a walk, filling in the corners at dissection points then painting in the shapes .
It came out beautifully , so much so that I'm going to pop it in a clippa frame !
Usually I hide or bin my art but this is a keeper - planning an A2 size for my staircase !

Ooh, never bin your art!

Maybe hide it, because it is always recoverable later, unless you forget where you hid it! smile

I had a go using the Microsoft Paint program on my computer.

Just a basic one that resulted in four shapes, not counting the background.

If I get a good one I can get it printed as a custom greetings card using one of the facilities on the web, then send it to myself.

Blossoming Tue 28-Jun-22 09:54:14

VioletSky I agree, it is lovely, it’s simple and so much fun.

StarDreamer I am using a sketchbook so won’t be destroying any. Just draw what you feel like, there are no hard and fast rules.

‘Taking a line for a walk’ is a great way of describing it tiredoldwoman smile

Oh my! I can't stop now!
Though the plan to do with DGD didn't happen - she wanted to show me her new dance routine & songs, so ma the next week.

Out a surprised me how different they're turning out. One looks quite delicate (my favourite) fewer lines quite naive, adding colour adds another dimension and which bits to colour etc. etc.

I've also tried doing DGCs names which is also interesting.

Please excuse the typos - note to self: preview next time.
