50th Wedding Anniversary celebration

Why not go to your nearest large city for the weekend ...find somewhere to visit during the day ...take in a show in the evening? ...perhaps a musical as it would be enjoyed by a wide age range? Many do saturday afternoon matinees too , if that would be easier?

If you have reasonably good access to London ...there are many available river trips for sight-seeing ...so you could just sit back and enjoy the views and commnetary.

Gillt as suggested try on of the cities for a week-end break,look for some special offer's for hotel's that have some offer's on for the family,your local Groupon site will tell you what is available in a city of your choice,you can also pick up some voucher's for lovely family meals at the same time,or if you have a reasonable sized garden why not a marque and treat yourselve's to a personal chef for the day. How wonderful to have 50 years together to celebrate. Congratulations. If it were me (and I shan't live long enough because my second marriage is only 13 years old), I would just do something nice with my husband but give something gold to my close family – daughter, daughter-in-law (if I had one) grandchildren. It wouldn't have to be a massive expense, just something small by which to remember us.

Many congratulations Gillt - how about a family gathering with outside caterers so you dont have to worry about food, drink or clearing up or moving out of your home unless you want to in which case most of the hotels will offer a a small private room. We did this for my fathers 80th some years ago and it was such a relief to hand it all over to someone else and we could all chat together. You can also arrange private viewings with wine etc in small art galleries or gardens near home. Whatever you do I hope you have a wonderful memorable time. You are an inspiration to us all.

Thanks for all suggestions, we are in Devon and part of family in Wiltshire so it rather restricts where we can go without too much travelling. My daughter suggested a barge trip then overnight in hotel but I think that might be a bit of a challenge for me.........Guess we will just explore the various ideas and cities....my husband doesn't want a party.

Congratulations Gillt, I'm also in Devon. We had a lovely weekend in Bath for one of our anniversary's which wasn't too far to travel and lots to do, one way to see the sights is by open top bus and we had a nice boat ride on the canal. Celebrated my 50th a few years ago in Padstow at Rick Steins Seafood restaurant. Quite fancy a special meal at Jamie Olivers restaurant in Cornwall too but then that's me, always thinking of my stomach!

Have you thought of Paignton Zoo if you are close enough to South Devon? Good parking or bus to the main entrance, plenty for all ages to do and you can get a good meal there. They do party bookings so could be worth a thought? They also have 'buggies' on loan for the less-mobile to be able to get around and with so much indoor as well as out the weather doesn't really matter either.
