Would you go and eat out alone

I probably wouldn't choose to eat in a restaurant alone under normal circumstances. I've eaten alone in many hotel restaurants whilst away on work related trips and I think my feelings were fairly neutral, that is I neither loved nor hated the experience.

I am probably the same as you..I often have lunch on my own in a cafe if I am out & about but would be less likely to go to a restaurant.. but no reason why not!

I never used to London cos I thought people were looking at me, now I just dont care if they are or not, if I am hungry its all about me and getiing some food...I guess thats the beauty of getting older....

I'm quite happy eating in a cafe on my own and I've taken myself off in a huff for a meal in a restaurant when DH and I fell out. The waiters didn't seem to know what to do with me , but I felt quite ok (I think that's because the adrenalin was running quite fast, though)!

Like baubles - if you travel on business which i used to quite a bit, you get used to it. Book/ newspaper and a spot of people watching.
I used to play "who are they and why are they out for a meal" if I was in the hotel restaurant.
e.g. a couple of academics entertaining a visiting lecturer/examiner
a group of trainees in the insurance industry.

If it was a training course you could sometimes check this out by looking at the bookings for meeting rooms.
I was completely flummoxed last time I did that - lots of nervous young men all there for the same reason but not previously known to each other. They were there for trials in the local football team.

Often go into a cafe or teashop on my own now, but I have had problems in the past - restaurant staff not wanting to provide a table for me as a single woman. Dont think I looked as if I was on the pull, but I got the impression they would not waste a table on me, a couple or family would spend more!!!

Of course its different if you are staying in a hotel, on a course or at a seminar.

If meeting the girls at a hotel/pub for a night out, I will never go in first on my own.

The situation never really arises but I often have coffee alone, and I would eat happily in familiar restaurants at lunchtime or even nearby country pubs.
I do prefer to be with someone though

No problems going into restaurants alone, specially if it's a local one and the staff know me.
I'd be a little bit hesitant about a pub full of beery men, even though I have as much right to be there as they do

When I travelled with both my previous jobs, I would often eat alone, it was either that or A) A very limited room service menu (if the hotel had room service) or B) Starve.

It never bothered me, I would choose a table where I could sit facing the room, take either some paperwork or (more often) the crossword and spend some happy time people watching!

I've always felt at ease going into a restaurant on my own but living abroad for so long I found that the people who greeted me when I did do this much more pleasent than the in the UK.During the week when I venture out to say Liverpool town centre I always pop into a local Irish pub for a meal with their fabulous Colcanon and have found that they are very welcoming I do infact enjoy my own company and sometimes just sit have a good coffee and people watch.

I think if you are a businesswoman, or have to be in a certain area for your job and have to find somewhere to eat, then in a way you feel justified in being alone in a restaurant. In those circumstances I would be fine, but I would never think of going alone to a restaurant for a meal in my ordinary day-to-day life!

I am happy to go anywhere alone, and if they try to give me a poor table I just smile and say 'I would prefer to sit over there'. I think it is just a matter of looking (and feeling) very confident. I did get 'chatted up' when I was younger, up to the time I emigrated to France when I was 60. Sometimes I actually agreed to share a table (and the bill, if he would let me) with a man I had just met in the bar whilst having a pre-dinner drink. I am aways open to new experiences. I was quite good at 'put downs' if any man got too forward or suggestive.
Nobody bothers me now, as I am a white haired old lady, with no make-up and clothes which are just comfortable.

Ana - why would you not think of going into a restaurant alone? I am intrigued to find such an attitude in the 21st century!

Greatnan good for you for the white hair and comfortable clothes, such a nice time of life!! Its ok that Ana does not feel comfortable going into restaurant alone just as it is ok for you to be ok with it 21st century or not, we are all different and thats great isn't it x x

Would if I could be bothered, but if I do I take a book. Nothing more boring than just sitting eating!

Reminds me I still haven't eaten since Wednesday. I'm not really hungry but suppose I'd better have something.

I'd eat out lunch time in a cafe but not a restaurant or pub. Funny thing really, I usually choose an M&S or Debenhams cafe.

I am quite happy to go into a restaurant or pub on my own - not a problem. Of course, I prefer to be with someone but it's not always possible!
