Red Krill Oil

Apparently its designed to help heart eye and brain function, saw it advertised on TV last night by Carol Vorderman,

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of this product, thanks

Greatnan Sat 27-Apr-13 08:47:55

I wouldn't buy anything advertised by Carole Vorderman! She has endorsed some very dodgy products in the past.

whenim64 Sat 27-Apr-13 09:15:13

Carol Vorderman has no credibility other than as a mathematician. I recently heard her declare that she is assured her nutrition is fine 'as long as I get a bag of salad leaves inside me every day!'

Another one who is deserving of that twp label we are getting fond of on here! grin

whenim64 Sat 27-Apr-13 09:16:23

That should have said twerp grin

Greatnan Sat 27-Apr-13 09:20:37

She finds Shakespeare boring. She did very badly on a general knowledge quiz and got a third rate degree. She just has that odd twist of the brain that enables people to do very rapid mental arithmetic.
I much prefer her replacement on Countdown - Rachel Gibson is very pretty, very clever, and has a charming personality. She has been appearing on Mock the Week does Countdown and is also very funny.

Now, does anybody know anything about Red Krill Oil?

annodomini Sat 27-Apr-13 09:29:03

This seems to be a very balanced critique of red krill oil. It sounds to me like a way to get more out of your wallet!

absent Sat 27-Apr-13 09:34:14

Krill is a huge biomass of shrimp-like creatures. The oil is high in essential omega 3 fatty acid – considerably higher than in fish oils. It also contains some other antioxidant but I can't remember what. Krill is the main food for baleen whales and I can't help feeling it should be left for them. Also in some areas there is toxic pollution. Krill oil supplements are much more expensive than fish oil supplements.

If you eat a balanced diet that includes such things as oily fish, leafy vegetables and walnuts, you shouldn't need any supplements. Omega 3 is also found in rapeseed (canola) and soya oil.

I think I agree with Greatnan on Carol Vordermans promotions being of possibly doubtful use. #dontwanttogetsued" wink
I think I have seen her on payday loans ads or some such thing with exhorbitant interest deals.

As a good rule I would suggest don't trust anything just because its promoted by a celebrity.
Just as I am sure many of these celebrities do not actually design any of the clothing, perfume, spectacle frames, that bear their name. I saw an optician promoting Heston Blumental's frames yesterday. He is chef for heavens sake.

Get a product endorsed and you can sell it for 50% more as it then becomes a "Designer Range". With the current obsession about sporting a Brand Name on every product you own, many people are being conned out of a lot of money. When very useable, un-endorsed but well made products do the job just as well.

And good eggs.

There was talk a few years back of harvesting krill, which set alarm bells ringing; as absent has pointed out it is at the very end of the food chain. Wipe it out by over fishing [or sieveing confused] and the rest of the upward food chain goes with it. As for La Vorderman, I've mentioned my disgust of the woman on another thread. Do wonder though, if this krill is red and eating shrimps turn shrimp eating birds pink, do people who eat it turn red eventually?

absent Sat 27-Apr-13 09:46:26

Tegan I think you are talking about flamingos. I have a vague recollection of reading somewhere that the idea that the birds' plumage is pink because of their diet of crustaceans is a myth. I can't remember where I read it though.

Nelliemoser Sat 27-Apr-13 09:46:54

"whenim" Or perhaps shouldn't have said twerp. Is it allowed? wink

What about the impact on the Eco system of harvesting the red Krill? Has that been assessed. ? It plays a very important role in the whole marine food chain.

absent Sat 27-Apr-13 09:51:35

Nelliemoser I think most harvested krill is used for fish farm fodder.

Nelliemoser Sat 27-Apr-13 09:53:08

Just scraping the very burnt porridge from the bottom of the pan caused by writing my rant on product promotion. The porridge was edible but a bit caramelised in flavour.

Gransnet's fault, as is a lot my charred cooking these days. grin

Tegan Sat 27-Apr-13 09:55:00

I thought that, when they lived in zoos they had to feed them some sort of food colouring to turn them pink again. Mind you, if that was the case and krill is red we've have red whales perhaps or maybe Blue Whales eat blue krill smile. But it is a bit early in the morning for me and I need another coffee to get the brain cells working [I had forgot what flamingos were called; had an image of this bird with it's head upside down in the water but, other than 'pelican' the correct name just couldn't push itself through the detritius in my head that is filled with trying to find the winner of the Bet365 Gold Cup this afternoon]. blush....

Greatnan Sat 27-Apr-13 09:57:01

My doctor's advice, which I have taken, is to eat sardines or mackerel on toast once a week, and my health is excellent. I chop up the fish with diced tomatoes, add black pepper and microwave for a minute and put it on one round of wholemeal toast. A very cheap, tasty and nutritious meal. I don't take any supplements as I think they can be dangerous, as they are not subject to the stringent laws that govern food and drink. They are also very bad for your budget.

Maniac Sat 27-Apr-13 10:05:05

Greatnan I Agree with you about supplements. That fish/tomato snack sounds yummy.
I went right off Carol V when she was promoting loans some years ago.

The wonders of google!

Thank you very much for your posts as usual they made very interesting reading, but yes to conclude do you think this product does what it says on the tin, I so want it to but will definitly heed your advise thank you

LullyDully Sat 27-Apr-13 11:05:13

So that's a no then.

JessM Sat 27-Apr-13 11:13:35

Supplement marketing is huge. Look at the words used. They say things like "may support healthy..." or "traditionally used to combat..."
There is an international free for all in making these carefully expressed claims
Show me the advert or packaging that says that proper controlled scientific studies with humans had shown conclusively that...
There was a recent crackdown by the European Food Standards on health claims on food supplements. No more "probiotic" yoghurt for instance.
Claims on supplements are not regulated anything like as strictly.
People buy supplements cathy because they want the claims to be true.

annodomini Sat 27-Apr-13 11:33:48

Here's another supplement she's advertised. Ever heard of it?

And another ad - about a debt consolidation company.

Greatnan Sat 27-Apr-13 11:40:53

My advice to anybody concerned about their health would be to eat something from all four food groups every day, in small portions if you are concerned about your weight, and to take as much fresh air and exercise as your health will allow.
The 'fad' diets, like Atkins, are dangerous and unbalanced
I have decided that I want my food to be as natural as possible, so a little butter instead of a substitute and as many fresh fruit and vegetables as possible. (Although tinned or frozen food can be very nutritious).

I am trying to find full fat yoghurts but there are none in most of the French supermarkets. I think 'fat free' or 'reduced fat' processed food may well contain sweeteners that I don't want..

Greatnan Sat 27-Apr-13 11:42:51

Blimey, that woman must rattle when she walks, if she takes all the stuff she advertises.
I wonder why she is so greedy - she must be a multi-millionaire.

annodomini Sat 27-Apr-13 11:49:17

Natural yoghurt doesn't contain sweeteners and you can add your own fruit. I use bananas, stewed apple and apricots. I sometimes buy a 'bucket' of low fat Greek style yoghurt in Lidl - never the fat-free kind which is tasteless.
