Royal titles

Andrew insisted on his children having titles. Presumably Edward didn't.

Surely the surname is still Windsor Riverwalk William of Wales and George of Cambridge are titles. But yes, they probably do make it up
I think George is a good name though.

They are all of the House of Windsor but as William and Kate are Duke and Duchess of Cambridge their son is a prince of Cambridge.

Beatrice and Eugenie are princesses of York.

Edward and Sophie's children are Wessexes but when the Duke of Edinburgh dies, Edward will become D of E so his children will be upgraded accordingly.

Royal children take their parents' titles as a surname. That's why William and Harry are known in the armed forces as William and Harry Wales.

William was made Duke of Cambridge on his marriage. After all there is still a Prince of Wales. William was known as Prince William "of Wales".

There seems to be a history of this title to those down the list in terms of position as heirs to the throne.

Maybe Edward took the same view as Princess Anne. She didn't have titles bestowed on her children as they were going to be so far away from inheriting the crown she felt it would be better if they didn't have them.

So why isn't Charles known as Charles Queen?

Edwards children do have titles, vampirequeen. They are Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn. They have been given more lowly titles than their cousins because Edward will be made Duke of Edinburgh when his father dies which will elevate them to prince and princess of Edinburgh.

The eldest son of the monarch is the Prince of Wales.

Isn't it incredible how much store we British still set on titles? I don't think the younger generation really want to know all these details that we've been brought up with.

Oh I didn't realise they had titles but now you say it I have to admit I've heard those titles being said.

All this royal title stuff has an interesting historical context, apart from that no relevance to the common person! Anyone who is watching the White Queen will appreciate how low key all this title and status bit is these days, thank goodness.

Perhaps the thing to remember about British history is how far we have come over the centuries to get a country with a stable democracy.

Watching programmes about the 100 Years War and the White Queen it's a wonder we have a stable aristocracy, let alone a stable democracy. Yesterdays programmes encompassed the peasants revolt and showed how, even thought the ringleaders were killed their actions still changed the course of history [still need to rewatch it all again though as more confused than ever]. George is meant to be a warlike name [according to one programme]. All about Joan of Arc next week.
