Gift to Australia

I have just had a new grandchild born in Australia. We have sent money but would also like to send a small personal gift. We are finding it very dificult to find something appropriate and suitable. (No wood!!! Reasonable postage- not more than the gift itself is worth!!) Any ideas of what has been well received by others?

A light-weight money box (i.e. not china) to start off the savings habit? You could include some Oz dollars as well if you wanted to.

Silver box for first tooth or first lock of hair to be cut? Birth certificate holder (tube shape). How about an heirloom shawl or a silver teething rattle?

Congratulations on the baby's arrival! smile

Congratulations hespian on the birth of a new grandchild. flowers. I would send a gift that is very British, definitely not something you could buy in Australia.

Congratulations on your new grandchild.
I have 4 gc's in Oz. I buy them Premium Bonds. Sending to Australia now is ridiculously expensive and most of the time the postage outweighs the value of the present! I usually wait until I am visiting and then take the things they can't get out there - mostly books which are prohibitive.

Not a clue but 'Congratulations' anyway

how about a Taggie which is a small blanket with little silky tags round the edge which babies seem to love when they get a bit older. Not very big so should not be too expensive to post. Congratulations! smile

Congratulations!
Re presents - baby clothes shouldn't cost too much in postage.

Re:taggie blankets. This woman is good - she made taggies for my little grandaughters, personalised with their names embroidered on, and my choice of material.

If you do go for a 'taggy'' can I suggest you get a duplicate or two. My GD goes nowhere without hers and 'Wabbit' has been lost more than once. DD managed to get a couple of (very expensive) replacements but it is now out of stock and only available on e-Bay for over £50 - I kid you not!! shock

Yes it takes the shine out of sending things to Australia when they charge you £7 to send 2 comics doesn't it. Sending things via Amazon may be cheaper than buying and posting yourself and watch out for the "free shipping" offers on Tesco clothes - there are no cheap children's clothes or adult undies over there, so a shipment of socks or whatever may be handy in future.
We had the same problem with Lambie. Back up Lambie now doing good service 8 years later.
Check re this as sometimes mothers have already selected favourite comfort object.

Good old M&S periodically have free delivery to Australia - I've just checked and it is on at the moment. It is really good - my daughter spends many a happy hour at her laptop choosing what she would like me to send out for her little twins sad

NEXT is free, but has to be ordered from Oz!

Thank you all so much for your suggestions. I have looked at Australian websites to get something delivered from there but unfortunately I have not been inspired so far. I would like to send something "British", especially as mummy is Australian and I am sure they will get many gifts from her Australian family.

To be honest the only thing I want to give the baby is a cuddle but that isn't possible. Finding it very hard. sad

I sympathise Hespian on both counts - my first DGD was born and lives in the US. I miss her and her little brother greatly.
Will you be able to visit?
I agree with the Amazon suggestion, though I don't know if it works as well for Australia as it does for the States.
But congratulations anywaysunshine

Does anyone know how you can be informed of "Free Shipping" by any of the companies mentioned? It makes an enormous difference especially when you just want to send a little something!
