Baby-led weaning - which means playing with their food before dropping it on the floor (mine just used to post it straight into the labrador)

Oh and "dream feeds" - never understood whether the baby is asleep (in which case why not leave well alone) or - as was usually my case - the mother is nodding off.

Yes yes yes Baby-led weaning!!! forgot that one, I may come up with a few. My DD is wonderful and a fantastic natural mother but I try not to smile when she comes out with these gems.

Yes. Everything is being intellectualised these days. I suppose it's because there is much more communication around now. And so called experts building their part up.

Mumsnet has got a lot to answer for.

I suppose as various research looks into different aspects of child development etc they come up with some genuinely new information/facts and names. Others seem to be same old with new names

However not only do we gain new words we also lose some: reins, harness, nappy pin, pram, bootees, bonnet, matinee jacket.....

oh and rompers!

I agree with all the above and I do smile when DD comes out with the latest new thing. But I have to say that I have taken it as a huge compliment that she seems to be bringing up DGS in the same way she was brought up (even if she does call it something fancy). At the same time, I have learned a lot from her as well - baby led weaning being one thing that has amazed me! I was very sceptical about that one - no purees, finger foods only, I was scared DGS would either choke or die of malnutrition. However, he's nearly three now and seems to have survived without ever being fed with a spoon

Baby-wearing. That's another one that means you tie them on somehow or other so that your hands are free to do something else.

This is my daughter you are describing as well. Guilty as charged with the baby slings and wraps.

She has though, taken to leaving food on the high chair tray and spooning food into his mouth. His dinner would take far too long if, as he likes doing, he just carried on eating his peas one at a time. DGS does seem to get a more interesting selection of tasty food than mine did though. He enjoys his Garlic bread at nursery.

My friend Rose, from Nigeria, showed me how to wear my DD on my back but I was ever brave enough to toss the baby onto my back when on my own!

My DGS2 has done the baby lead weaning thing..it takes him ages to get through a meal!

Nellie I was forbidden from ever spooning a morsel into his mouth! That's why I was so worried he would starve. He was however breast fed up to the age of two so I knew he was getting some nourishment. And he certainly seems sturdy enough now

Might be something to that...I remember feeding my two year old so I wouldn't have to clean up a mess above and below the high chair.Later i was told his fine motor control wasn't as good as it should of been.

Nightowl I would have been worried as well. DGS is quite short as it is. He probably has too many "short genes" from
both sides of DDs family.

A lot of the baby care is just the same, only with different words. I got to my son's house this teatime to find eight month old grandson with his face stuck in a jam doughnut!! 'He's trying new tastes so we don't get a faddy eater!' justified DIL.

My daughter is combining baby led with spoon feeding for the new one. Actually he just eats anything put in front of him and doesn't care how it arrives. She was a bit put out when a total stranger saw her wearing him to school and accused her of being "one of those New Age Hippy mothers"

nellie he's gorgeous, and judging by those lovely chubby legs I'm sure he'll be ok. Not sure how you can make him taller

Oh! Thank God, I'm not the only one thinking that this is all ott!
I don't dare argue with DD, Kate, my cleaner argues with me but doesn't dare with DD,
Every time she comes , we have to go through all the cupboards and the fridge!
If its 2 minutes out of date it's dangerous and I'm made to feel very guilty!
Her SO does however back me up on Rochefort cheese. It's only ready for eating when it's past it's bb date!
However Kate (cleaner) wins out as she ends up with loads of stuff just after the BB date!

When we were kids, tinker women used to come round the door selling white heather and clothes pegs, with their babies tied round them with tartan shawls. Nothing new under the sun. African women tie their babies to their backs while they work in the fields.
