What do other GNetters think of all of the latest descriptions of things we took for granted. The comment about NCT made me think. I will list a few:

Babies now have a 'Growth Spurt' (mine just grew and fed accordingly)
Babies now suffer from Separation Anxiety (mine were clingy at times)
Breasts now have 'Fore milk, something in the middle and something at the end (mine just fed the baby until it was full)
Babies have to bond with the father before anything else in the world (mine bonded as and when daddy was home from work)
Some babies 'co-sleep' (mine sometimes slept with me but mostly in their crib by the bed)
Some babies are being brought up with something called 'Attachment' (mine were put in a sling and carried round)
Dads seem to need and update on everything Baby does via text several times a day so that he doesn't feel neglected.

There must be more strange and wonderful things going on in bringing up babies these days. Any thoughts? grin

Baby-led weaning - which means playing with their food before dropping it on the floor (mine just used to post it straight into the labrador)smile

gracesmum Sun 08-Sep-13 20:34:58

Oh and "dream feeds" - never understood whether the baby is asleep (in which case why not leave well alone) or - as was usually my case - the mother is nodding off.wink

Yes yes yes Baby-led weaning!!! forgot that one, I may come up with a few. My DD is wonderful and a fantastic natural mother but I try not to smile when she comes out with these gems.

Kindred spirits I think wink again!

j08 Sun 08-Sep-13 20:42:28

Yes. Everything is being intellectualised these days. I suppose it's because there is much more communication around now. And so called experts building their part up.

j08 Sun 08-Sep-13 20:44:02

Mumsnet has got a lot to answer for. hmm

Penstemmon Sun 08-Sep-13 20:45:34

I suppose as various research looks into different aspects of child development etc they come up with some genuinely new information/facts and names. Others seem to be same old with new nameshmm

However not only do we gain new words we also lose some: reins, harness, nappy pin, pram, bootees, bonnet, matinee jacket.....

Penstemmon Sun 08-Sep-13 20:46:09

oh and rompers!

nightowl Sun 08-Sep-13 20:53:40

I agree with all the above and I do smile when DD comes out with the latest new thing. But I have to say that I have taken it as a huge compliment that she seems to be bringing up DGS in the same way she was brought up (even if she does call it something fancy). At the same time, I have learned a lot from her as well - baby led weaning being one thing that has amazed me! I was very sceptical about that one - no purees, finger foods only, I was scared DGS would either choke or die of malnutrition. However, he's nearly three now and seems to have survived without ever being fed with a spoon grin

Baby-wearing. That's another one that means you tie them on somehow or other so that your hands are free to do something else.

Nelliemoser Sun 08-Sep-13 21:04:26

grin This is my daughter you are describing as well. Guilty as charged with the baby slings and wraps.

She has though, taken to leaving food on the high chair tray and spooning food into his mouth. His dinner would take far too long if, as he likes doing, he just carried on eating his peas one at a time. DGS does seem to get a more interesting selection of tasty food than mine did though. He enjoys his Garlic bread at nursery.

Penstemmon Sun 08-Sep-13 21:07:20

Been doing that wearing for a while in Africa/Asia!!

My friend Rose, from Nigeria, showed me how to wear my DD on my back but I was ever brave enough to toss the baby onto my back when on my own!

My DGS2 has done the baby lead weaning thing..it takes him ages to get through a meal!

nightowl Sun 08-Sep-13 21:08:49

Nellie I was forbidden from ever spooning a morsel into his mouth! That's why I was so worried he would starve. He was however breast fed up to the age of two so I knew he was getting some nourishment. And he certainly seems sturdy enough now grin

Nelliemoser Sun 08-Sep-13 21:25:29

On my profile page is a photo of "Mother earth" with DGS in the latest sling. It would make lovely throw!

Enviousamerican Sun 08-Sep-13 21:29:01

hmmMight be something to that...I remember feeding my two year old so I wouldn't have to clean up a mess above and below the high chair.Later i was told his fine motor control wasn't as good as it should of been.

Nelliemoser Sun 08-Sep-13 21:29:54

Nightowl I would have been worried as well. DGS is quite short as it is. He probably has too many "short genes" from
both sides of DDs family.

whenim64 Sun 08-Sep-13 21:31:17

A lot of the baby care is just the same, only with different words. I got to my son's house this teatime to find eight month old grandson with his face stuck in a jam doughnut!! 'He's trying new tastes so we don't get a faddy eater!' justified DIL. grin

Deedaa Sun 08-Sep-13 21:33:06

My daughter is combining baby led with spoon feeding for the new one. Actually he just eats anything put in front of him and doesn't care how it arrives. She was a bit put out when a total stranger saw her wearing him to school and accused her of being "one of those New Age Hippy mothers"

nightowl Sun 08-Sep-13 21:39:45

when grin they can find a justification for everything can't they?

nellie he's gorgeous, and judging by those lovely chubby legs I'm sure he'll be ok. Not sure how you can make him taller hmm

Galen Sun 08-Sep-13 21:45:32

Oh! Thank God, I'm not the only one thinking that this is all ott!
I don't dare argue with DD, Kate, my cleaner argues with me but doesn't dare with DD,
Every time she comes , we have to go through all the cupboards and the fridge!
If its 2 minutes out of date it's dangerous and I'm made to feel very guilty!
Her SO does however back me up on Rochefort cheese. It's only ready for eating when it's past it's bb date!
However Kate (cleaner) wins out as she ends up with loads of stuff just after the BB date!

Galen Sun 08-Sep-13 21:47:15

By the way, I've put a photo of DD (pregnant) and DGD on my profile!

annodomini Sun 08-Sep-13 21:50:37

When we were kids, tinker women used to come round the door selling white heather and clothes pegs, with their babies tied round them with tartan shawls. Nothing new under the sun. African women tie their babies to their backs while they work in the fields.

Sook Sun 08-Sep-13 22:03:50

Galen lovely photograph. Your DDs bump looks very neat.

Nellie I love the sling, it's gorgeous, agree with you that it would make a lovely throw.
