Afternoon all,

A friend has just phoned in a bit of a quandary. She was preparing supper for later, penne pasta with chorizo in a spicy tomato sauce, with cheese topping. She had cooked the pasta, but realised she was a bit short of milk to make the cheese sauce.

She left the pasta in a sieve on the worktop, and popped round to the village shop to get more milk. When she returned she found one of her cats tucking into the plain boiled pasta shock !!

It didn't seem as if he had eaten very much of it, but she is wondering if she just poured boiling water over the rest of it, would it be ok?

I'd put the pasta out for the birds and cook up some more. grin

Just pouring boiling water over it wouldn't sterilise the pasta, P.
I would be inclined to make it a pasta bake - bung everything into a Pyrex dish and bake at 170C for at least half an hour.
I think your friend will live.
Enjoy wink

well pasta is not expensive so maybe make a new batch?

I mean to say the cat could have previously suppered on a mouse!!!!

sorry to b the one to point that out

He/she may also have just been licking its bum! shock

jane grin

I think it was always intended to be an oven-cooked pasta bake.

Oh Ana I did NOT want that image in my head!! shock

Ana Thu 23-Jan-14 13:03:09

Sorry, but it's what cats do...

Back in the 70's I made a quiche to enter in the village show. I left it in the kitchen for 5 minutes and when I came back the cat had eaten a big hole in the middle of it. No time to bake another one so I filled the hole with beaten egg and stuck it under the grill to set. I won 1st prize and the judge said what a lovely flavour it had!

Deedaa grin

I would have fed it to my chickens but if the cat likes it......

Went to a party once and their cat got on the dining room table and was tucking into the buffet. Yuk! I would make sure the cat had it for every meal - no Whiskas until you've eaten all that pasta!

I suspect the problem would be loose cat hair getting into the pasta rather than anything else. I'd have put it all in the cat's dish so that he/she could finish it at leisure and cooked a fresh batch of penne for people. It's not as if it takes very long. Of course, the cat would spurn pasta in its dish because penne is only tempting to felines if they can steal it.

Send the cat round here - there's always lenty of leftovers! grin

I remember my mother having a dinner party and about half an hour before the guests were do to arrive I heard her shout from the kitchen "Oh no Phoenix! The cat's just eaten your prawn cocktail!"

It never occurred to me at the time to ask why, out of 6 identical prawn cocktails the cat had got at "mine" hmm

merlotgran Thu 23-Jan-14 23:08:38

A case of FHB, Phoenix?

Anne58 Thu 23-Jan-14 23:09:53

Definitely merlot but not just FHB, more NFP (none for Phoenix)!

Aka Thu 23-Jan-14 23:14:17

It's only pasta not Petrossian caviar FGS. Chuck it out and cook some more.

Reminds me of the time my younger brother hosted a big family get together. He's the cook in his family and just before we were due to eat he muttered to my DD who was about 12 at the time, 'Get your mother in here, I need her loaves and fishes skills'

His border collie had just bitten a huge chunk out of the honey roast ham!!

For my OH's 50th our daughters had organised a wonderful surprise party for him, guests travelling in from Cornwall and Bournemouth. The table was groaning with delicious food when I discovered a half eaten squirrel under the table courtesy of the cat. Not knowing the journey this contribution to the festivities had taken I decided not to mention it to les girls, scooped it up and threw it out. Everyone survived but it took some quick work.
