Following the success of The Older People in the Media Awards last year, we're delighted to be involved again this year.

As last year, there will be a special Gransnet award for the best older person's character in a film, TV or radio drama, chosen by gransnetters. (Last year, Anne Reid won for her role as Celia in Last Tango in Halifax). As last year, the character must have first appeared in the media between Thursday 15 August 2013 and Thursday 14 August 2014.

Full details on the page. You can also vote on all the other categories on the Independent Age website.

This is a really good way of generating discussion and shining a light on coverage that has either positively portrayed older people, or sensitively highlighted the issues they face.

Suggest nominations here. We'll have a chance to vote on a shortlist after the summer.

Nominations are now closed - thank you to everyone who has given their suggestions!

Una Stubbs.......saw her on the BBC programme on the RSA Summer exhibition....she's a pretty good artist as well as an actress....but most of all she just comes across as great fun and very sincere.

The character of Catherine Cawood (played by Sarah Lancaster) in Happy Valley. Tough, feisty, professional and caring.

Ana Wed 11-Jun-14 12:41:58

Hmm...Sarah Lancashire's only 49, is she old enough to be classed as 'older'?

Aka Wed 11-Jun-14 12:51:42

How old was her character? She was a grandmother after all.

Ana Wed 11-Jun-14 12:59:39

Yes, but not an old one! grin

Aka Wed 11-Jun-14 13:20:48

But it says 'older' not old.....

Aka Wed 11-Jun-14 13:21:19

hmm

Helen Mirren in those Lynda La Plante police series. Sadly her character's name in them escapes me for the moment.

papaoscar Wed 11-Jun-14 14:31:13

Sir David Jason as Del Boy, and John Taw as Morse.

'As last year, the character must have first appeared in the media between Thursday 15 August 2013 and Thursday 14 August 2014.'

I'm afraid that rules out all your choices, papaoscar.

Brenda Blethyn as Vera. I know there has been criticism of her accent on GN, but I enjoyed the series.

I like Dame Maggie Smith, for me she was the star of Downton Abbey

Judthepud2 Wed 11-Jun-14 17:05:50

Yes absolutely Dame Maggie Smith! Brilliant character portrayal in Downtown Abbey!

HollyDaze Wed 11-Jun-14 17:25:48

Charles Dance (he has the kind of voice I could listen to all day!). I think the latest thing he's been in is Game of Thrones but as it's a Sky only, I shall have to buy the boxed set.

annodomini Wed 11-Jun-14 17:32:24

Dame Maggie was in DA before 'between Thursday 15 August 2013 and Thursday 14 August 2014'. Haven't seen GoT and really don't want to!

HollyDaze Wed 11-Jun-14 17:35:21

I shan't invite you round to watch it with me then annodomini wink

papaoscar Wed 11-Jun-14 18:10:13

Thort 'twas too easy!

annodomini Wed 11-Jun-14 18:17:28

I'm cool with that HollyDaze - my GD is a fan and could bore for England on the subject!

If its a character rather than the actor.....then for me its got to be Kirster Henrickson's Wallander. A man of a certain age who has made mistakes but tries his best at being a father and grandfather. He has a demanding job that leaves him little time for himself. He craves love, and still manages to win the occasional lady over. Now he is facing, what looks like dementia, and his bleak expression of confusion and loss towards his daughter in the car, in last week's episode was heartbreakingly true. Yes, its a depressing thought but a truthful representation of a caring, intelligent older character battling with dementia is a very brave and inspiring dramatic choice.

As it says film, TV or drama, i would nominate Judi Dench for Philomena. Unless they mean a TV film - not quite sure if I have got the right end of the stick.

KatyK Wed 11-Jun-14 18:44:12

I also like Iain Glen as Jack Taylor (he's only 52 though)

ninathenana Wed 11-Jun-14 18:52:22

I want to say Alan or Celia from Last Tango in Halifax but it was first aired in 2012 sad

Hmmm, <goes away to think>

Ana Wed 11-Jun-14 18:55:33

Just had a look at the Full Details page and it does seem to include all films, made for tv or not. (Dame Maggie has won before - does that mean she can't win again? confused)

Ana Wed 11-Jun-14 18:58:33

I'll answer my own question - she can't win for her character in Downton as that was first aired years ago...

Anne Reid's Celia won last year, ninathenana!
