Since my wife has osteoarthritis, one of my things I've been doing for years is vegetable peeling. Recently, my tried and trusted peeler has started to fall apart. It comes from the children always leaving wooden-handled utensils (said peeler, carving knives, paring knives, steak knives etc) to soak in water, rather than washing, drying and putting back in place.

My problem is I can't find a similar peeler to replace the damaged one. This is where I ask your advice. I'm looking for a peeler with a wooden handle that is flattened on the sides for a comfortable grip. the rounded ones don't feel comfortable to use, especially when I'm preparing veg for the family of five and usually a visiting friend of family member. If I was asked to describe the shape, a cross-section would be lozenge-shaped - a rectangle with the corners cut off.

I've looked in countless stores and on-line but I can't find one like the one that has served us well over the years. Have any of you seen something similar? Many Thanks!

I think they are the most personal piece of kitchen equipment. No one else's is ever as good. DH and I use totally different ones!

Definitely personal. We have two little paring knives that look the same. DH prefers one, I hate it. Mine has a rubber band on the handle to differentiate.
And to show how different we all are, I can't stand vegetable peelers, keep stripping skin off myself.

I can't visualize your peeler from your description. Have you tried the swivel sort? They make light work of the job. Ebay have a huge selection of peelers if you do a search. For example:

I use an Oxo Goodgrips one which is really comfortable to hold - if that's any help!

Are you still there Knowsley? I think my second suggestion might be the one you are after, and it is a one-off, so get in there quickly if you are interested! Good luck! smile

Although the one in my link is also as you describe, Knowsley.

I do hope you come back and tell us what you think - it's frustrating when posters ask for help and then disappear...

I agree about the Oxo Goodgrips peeler. Oxo masher is also the best as all force is projected downwards by the horizontal handle.

If I don't feel like peeling potatoes for mash, I just boil and mash them with the skins on. Haven't found it a problem. Some of the bits of skin stick to the masher, the rest we eat.

What a lot of kind posters here. I never knew there were so many different kinds of peeler! We have used the swivel ones for years and I use them slicing away from me, rather than towards. We all have different likes and ways, don't we.

shysal Sat 27-Sep-14 12:02:46

I am afraid I do it the unsafe way, towards me! I have recently aquired a julienne peeler, which is great for making a few strips of carrot for a salad, and less wet than using a grater.

I use an ordinary table knife. I had a peeler when first married, after a few years it gave up the ghost, always meant to get a new one, but never did, tried to use one recently but failed miserably, back to the knife!

I use one of the swivel type for carrots, parsnips and anything long. I use a paring knife for potatoes. My knife was a wedding present, and is still going strong.

Apologies folks, British Rail are doing a lot of construction work at the local station, which is next door to the telephone exchange, which means I lose my internet connection for quite a lot of the time.

The one which looks most like the peeler I use is the one suggested by Ana so I'll be buying that one.

A BT engineer has called, replaced my router and phone socket but still getting breaks in Broadband access. Put a claim in, but have just had an acknowledgement of so far.

Thanks everyone!

Good luck with your broadband Knowsley, and happy peeling!

Glad we were able to help, Knowsley! smile
