Even just writing the title seems unreal!
It's all been a bit of a shock, but a very nice one

Well can I be honest?
At first when I was told my baby girl (aged 26) was expecting her first child, it was mixed emotions.....
I feel a bit guilty now

At first all I could think of is how our fantastic mother/daughter/best friends relationship was never going to be the same again, I was going to have to share her, and this next generation now coming has made me move along on the shelf of life .....

Now I have the first scan picture at 12 weeks........
I am so happy and excited for her
She has got the most unbelievable love and joy to come
I'm absolutely over the moon for her, and can't wait to be a part of it all when I'm needed smile

It's absolutely wonderful smile

Yes Sanders - It is a most amazing wonderful time and being a grandmother is the best thing. I am finding it is bringing back so many happy memories of when my children were little. And the grandparent/grandchild relationship is such a special one. You will now have a smile on your face whenever you think of what is to come. Congratulations and welcome to Gransnet.

Huge congratulations, you will love every minute. To be honest, I felt just the same mixed emotions when my DD first told me too, but like you the first scan did for me. Brilliant!

Thanks so much

Wow great grandparents now know, the reaction was amazing considering its not how their generation would do things........ babies have a habit of coming along regardless of circumstance sometimes haha
We are all thrilled!
Great website.....Will enjoy dipping into some of the forumssmile

Welcome sanderling. It is a most wonderful thing being a grandmother. My DD was 23 when she told me she was pregnant for the first time. We went to see my mother to break the news to her as my DD was not married (but she was in a long term relationship) and mother being old fashioned, we wondered how she would take the news. We need not have worried. She was so excited that she was going to be a great grandma. She managed to live to see all my DD's four children.

I have been a GN member since March, so fairly recent. I love it !!!

Great chat, advice, and competitions.

Do I sound like an advert?grin

hi sanders I'm a new gran too, I finally got to be one at 65. My grandson is 3 months old this week and I get to go once a week (going there today) to play with him and push him in his pram. I love it when people peer into the pram and say how gorgeous he is (he is! he is!) and I am sure I beam like a proper grandma.

On top of everything else, he really is gorgeous grin he was born weighing over 9 lbs, he is now nearly 20 lbs so he is a bonny boy. He has a shock of black hair and an Elvis scowl. I'm nuts about him. It's my DIL not my daughter, so slightly different relationship but she is entirely generous about letting me take him out - often all by myself.

It is an immense joy having a baby in my life.

I love being grandma to my 6 and one third (!) GC. It is a watershed and takes a bit of getting used to, especially when one's own parents die and you have to take on board that you are the ones who are likely to fall of the pile next! But there is so much to enjoy in being a grandparent and I send you all good wishes.

Be prepared to fall in love - madly, deeply, unconditionally! I knew I would love my grandchildren - of course - but was totally unprepared for the way in which my love for them just overwhelmed me. It's still the case now that there are 4 of them - oldest 8 years.

As the saying goes "if I'd know how wonderful grandchildren are, I would have had them first"!

goldengirl Thu 16-Oct-14 16:19:14

I love my GC dearly but they are certainly exhausting. But it's great fun bringing out the old toys and reading those well loved stories, just make sure you keep your knees in good shape for getting up and down off the floor!
Many congratulations!

You have years of fun ahead, sanderling! Congratulations, hope all goes well. flowers

Yes it''s wonderful...i watch my 1 year old grandchild for 3 days 7am till 5pm . I am a bit of a grump in the mornings but when i see her smiley face and i get my slobery kiss it cheers me up no end. I am exhausted at the end of the day but i would't want it any other way. ENJOY x

HollyDaze Thu 16-Oct-14 20:18:36

Hello Sanderling and congratulations on your wonderful news smile

Be prepared to fall in love - madly, deeply, unconditionally! - that comment from YankeeGran sums it up nicely. With grandchildren, you get the best of both worlds. Ooh, I do envy you all that grin

And welcome to GN as well.

Deedaa Thu 16-Oct-14 22:02:57

Don't worry about your relationship with your daughter, this will just add another layer to it. And I'm sure you'll be like the rest of us and adore the new baby flowers

sanderling Fri 17-Oct-14 07:39:28

Thankyou all, what a lovely welcome xxx

I'm so lucky to still have my own mother (and dad too) around to share this with as well

Nelliemoser Fri 17-Oct-14 08:48:42

sanderling Congratulations! I remember how I felt when DD told me she was first pregnant. I just burst into tears as I had been hoping for such an announcement for ages.

Now with a just two yr old DGS I was "allowed" last Friday after the 12 week scan to officially announce that baby #2 is on its way for next 24 April.

The delights of being a Gran are infectious as you see from the congratulations on here.
There have been days when GN regulars have been virtually pacing the floor to await the birth of the next baby, when a GNer has announced the mother is in labour.

I have already been speculating my strategy to get the 50 miles over to look after my DGS when mum goes into labour. No bag packed just yet though.

Part of me irrationally thinks I could not possibly be as besotted over number 2 as I am over no 1. Just wait until you hold the little one and smell that baby smell.

annodomini Fri 17-Oct-14 09:47:36

Welcome sandering. You have so much joy to come. Being a parent and being a grandparent are two very different experiences, but both very rewarding. All babies are precious but there's always something special about the first. Don't worry, Nellie. They are all special in their own ways. My brain goes all mushy when any one of mine comes for a hug.

annodomini Fri 17-Oct-14 09:50:12

sanderling - sorry for the typo!
Nellie, you are so right about that baby smell. I first smelt it when I met my own baby sister and still remember it after 71 years!

sanderling Tue 21-Oct-14 17:38:12

Awwwwwww, baby is the size of a large lemon
A long way to grow yet haha

Maggiemaybe Tue 21-Oct-14 19:00:41

My grandbabies have the power to turn my brain and my heart to mush too, annodomini! But I can't agree that the arrival of the younger ones is any less special than the first. I was completely bowled over when I met DGS1 for the first time, and completely bowled over again when DGS2 arrived less than seven months later. And I think I can take a wild guess as to how DGC3's arrival in March is going to go..... smile sunshine A fireworks emoticon would be handy!

Congratulations, sanderling, and welcome to the best club in the world! flowers

I had exactly the same feeling when my DD told me she was pregnant just over four years ago sanderling. DD was 24 and halfway through a degree, and although she was in a long term relationship to say the pregnancy came as a shock is an understatement. To be perfectly honest, although I had been saying how much I would love to be a granny, the first thought that popped into my head completely unexpectedly was 'I've lost my baby girl'.

I was very lucky to spend a lot of time with DD throughout her pregnancy, and we became close in a different way from before. DGS is now four and he is the light of my life, along with my (step)DGS who came into my life at about the same time. You have so much to look forward to, and your relationship with your DD will develop and strengthen in every way.

sanderling Wed 22-Oct-14 19:55:06

'I've lost my baby girl' is exactly how I felt!

We shop together, lunch together, drink cocktails, buy make-up together all the fun things that ive just re-discovered.........
I sound so very selfish!!!
I look after two parents with dementia, both of which are wonderful but challenging
My daughter keeps me young, because shes my baby, now she's going to be the same 'rank' as me hahaha

But now we are into week 13-14, I am absolutely thrilled! How lucky I'm I to share this with her?!

I do remind myself how fortunate we all are xxxx

nightowl Wed 22-Oct-14 20:07:47

We are indeed fortunate sanderling. As maggiemaybe says, it's the best club in the world!

And don't worry, your DD will never be the same rank as you. Just remember, gran knows best wink
