Christening cake for older children

I have just been told that my DS & DDIL are having the 3 children christened in June.
They will be boy of 6, girl of 3 1/2 & boy just 1.

Therefore I can't even do pink or blue let alone the usual things like cribs, babies etc.

Ay ideas? I have looked online but they either look like novelty birthday cakes or too young & all pink & blue!

I used to teach sugarcraft & had a small business making wedding cakes so I can manage most things but need inspiration. It is same week as elder boy's 6th birthday too so I will be very busy.

Any ideas??

I once did a birthday cake which had blue sky, white clouds and a colourful hot air balloon with ropes and a basket underneath with the child in question looking out of the basket. It could easily be done with three heads looking out. Not very 'christening' but the children would appreciate it.

Maybe pale gold/yellow colour or lilac both neutral with toys i.e. car and pram or my first thought was photos of the children on top with some fancy work around the sides. DGS whose nearly six loves to see photos of himself.

You can get a photo turned into an icing "plaque" that you can put on top of the cake - my DDs did that for our ruby wedding with a wedding photo of us.

I would do it in all white icing with the plaque like mentioned above of their faces and then names in pink and blue. Additions could be a cross in silver. I hope you all have a wonderful time and congratulations on your lovely grandchildren. x

The photo plaque is what I meant smile ruby I like the idea of white with pink and blue names.

I love both the idea of a picture & the balloon- I might make 2!!

I've never used these photo plaques as I like to make my own models but for something like this it could well be the answer. I can still do lots of fancy piping & flowers etc.
I'm now seeing a balloon with figures of the children with photo faces but that may be just a step to far.

maybe the 6 year would would like a balloon with his favourite character inn it- no idea who that will be by June! We've done Gruffulo, Jake, Bob & Pat in the past. Probably a footballer before long!!

thank you very much - feeling calmer.

I wouldn't do the 6 year old's balloon/plaque different to his siblings, I think it would be best to do them all the same. x

I wouldn't bring in favourite characters for a Christening cake, save that for birthday cakes. I like the ideas posted above of white cake, hot air balloon, three figures and the photos faces, plus their names in pink and blue. Sounds good enough to eat! smile

Sorry- I meant the balloon cake with figures for 6th year old's birthday which is week before the Christening.

Next month I have to do a Frozen themed cake for DGD 7th.
I don't fancy doing Elsa or the other one but may be able to get away with the snowman ( Oleg??) & making the cake look like a castle of ice.

As long as I NEVER have to do another flaming Tardis- I had navy blue hands for weeks afterwards & all DGS wanted to know was if the door opened & was it bigger inside!

Next week, for DGD, I am doing a white sponge oblong cake with multicoloured numbers 14 through the centre, covered with marbled fondant in the same colours. Could you perhaps hide the children's initials inside the christening cake(s)? Or even make a letter shaped cake for each child?

This week I made a cake based on this idea, for DGS's 10th birthday.

January is a busy month for me, as last week I made a round cake for DD with coloured spots through the inside, decorated with butterflies. As you can probably guess, my latest experiments have been with 'surprise inside' cakes! I was running out of ideas after 15 years of baking for 6 GCs. Thank goodness for the internet!

I'd love to see photographs shysal.

Dusty, I haven't been present at the cutting of the cakes, so no photos of the interesting part. I am hoping DGD's 14th cake will be as effective as this, I have cut out the numbers and frozen them so far.

N.B. Not using Betty Crocker white cake mix, following a recipe using whites of eggs only, and Trex/butter for the fat.
