Do you think this may be Freecycle Scam?

Good morning all.

Someone was listing a lap top on our local Freecycle, said it was available due to having a new Mac from his employers. I expressed an interest, heard nothing then contacted him again.

I received this reply:

"Oh, that is far from me,I just relocated to Edinburgh. But if you are
really interested, I can have it deliver to you via courier, you
will just need to take care of the charges. It is not so expensive from here.
Find attached pics of the item.
Regards."

He was also offering a plasma screen TV, but I said that as we already had a decent TV, it would be better if that went to someone with a greater need.

Now, in his original listing there was no mention of any relocation! Many people will say things such as "needs to be collected asap as new furniture/kitchen arriving soon" or things along those lines.

Alarm bells are ringing, and I have emailed the moderators with the message from him C&P'd, but haven't heard back from them yet.

What are your thoughts?

Don't touch with barge pole. Is my thoughts unless you can get an address from them and they are willing to let you choose and pay for the courier.

I'd be very wary Phoenix I am assuming he will ask you for money for the postage, is there such a thing as Cash on Delivery anymore? Trouble is if it arrives and you pay and its not what you thought you were getting you are stuck with it.. I;d give it a wide berth honestly, Freecycle is no longer what it was intended to be and there are many scammers out there who use it to make money. How disappointing for you .

How sad that Freecycle, which began with such laudable aims, is being corrupted by scammers. They are everywhere.

Elegran Wed 11-Feb-15 10:55:07

I agree with Brenda How can he still have a good lap-top uncollected? I have offered things of far less value and had a dozen people wanting them, a laptop would go in a flash.

Sounds dodgy to me - in fact I think that people can't ask for money, so asking for you to pay a courier could be agin the rules anyway.

He could have twenty people sending him courier money, and none of them getting a laptop.

Email the moderators again - they can check his previous dealings.

Thank you all, you have said what I was thinking!

I didn't reply to his last email, btw!

Do report it to your Freecycle moderators phoenix. I was one at one time and these scams keep popping up however hard the mods try to keep them out but they can alert everyone else.

This is a classic scam that appears on Freecycle every few months and as a Moderator I just say avoid, avoid, avoid!

Anne58 Wed 11-Feb-15 11:27:57

A while ago we seemed to have a run of people offering 32" flat screen TV's! I didn't respond to the listings, but was surprised that there was no word from the Moderators about it.

There were 3 or 4 different "people" listing them, and I though it was obvious that there was something no right about it.

chocolatepudding if it is as you say a classic scam, (and I think you are spot on!) why haven't our moderators picked up on it and sent emails to all members about it?

Charleygirl Wed 11-Feb-15 11:47:15

phoenix money never changes hands on Freecycle and as Elegran said, the person could make a mint offering the laptop to 20 people and accepting £5.99 at least from each and nobody receiving the item. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

A little off-piste, sorry. Last week DS offered Little Tikes playhouse on Freecycle and somebody turned up with a little car to transport it. Once assembled these plastic houses are the devil to take apart and it would not go in the car so it was strapped on the roof. I would have loved to see it grin

chocolatepudding Wed 11-Feb-15 16:46:56

Phoenix - I guess your moderators haven't noticed the scam offer - I know I don't read every message posted. The member concerned should be blacklisted or removed! Our site has slowed down enormously (during the past year) and I guess people are using the FB pages instead.

Thanks cp I've just contacted the Mods again, hopefully they will take it down!

aggie Wed 11-Feb-15 17:29:47

Anne58 Wed 11-Feb-15 17:33:44

aggie Wed 11-Feb-15 17:35:04

errrrrrrr mmmmmmmm my kids ?

Anne58 Wed 11-Feb-15 17:47:19

This posting (below) was listed under 3 different names, in 3 different locations, with exactly the same wording !

OFFER: !!6 months old Led Flat Tv ~ (Near Wadebridge)

Have 32inch Tv coming with remote and cables.having problems with my
husband now am leaving with my grandma

hmm

aggie Wed 11-Feb-15 17:49:24

No that's not one of mine lol

carol123 Wed 11-Feb-15 17:50:57

this reminds me of a puppy scam that goes round - puppy is free to good home but when you email they are miles away so you have to pay for transport, vet fees etc usually via western union to a 'sick mother in africa' who needs money for hospital fees. Puppy never arrives - what a surprise. And yes I do know someone who fell for it and lost money!

alisonobrien Mon 23-Feb-15 15:11:44

Yes it's a scam. The moderator on our local one warned us about it.

Lion Mon 08-May-17 13:37:41

This is happening again over 2 years later.
I do not know about the post I replied and if i replied to one.
But the second approach was stating exactly the same words as the shown by Anne58. Only this time the scammer has moved to Leeds.
In the first approach, mirabel sally [email protected]
says:
Yes, I still have the 43 inch flat screen TV and a mac book to offer anyone who needs.
The items belong to my daughter Kate (in loving memory) whom i lost two months ago in a car accident.
Ever since then I feel so bad when I look at her stuff in her room, so i have decided to give them away some of the items. I have given away her , guitar and bicycle. But also wanna give away this these to anyone is in need of them. I posted this advert a few days ago before I left but the moderator took to long to approve y post. so i left with the items when no one had contacted to take them i just relocated . where are you located ?
