I cooked a chicken casserole on Wednesday and put the leftovers straight in the fridge when it was cold then forgot all about it .
Would you still eat it? I just took it out it looks and smells fine and it was delicious I'm loathe to bin but a bit dubious as to whether it would be ok to eat.
Its just for me so the only one suffering is myself grin

As long as the chicken has only been cooked once, and you reheat it thoroughly, till it's piping hot right through, it should be fine. I have a three day limit on things like this, so I would eat it today, but chuck it out tomorrow wink

I would agree with Indinana but after heating it to boiling point leave it to simmer for 5 - 10 minutes.

Front think I would take the risk after a few days. Better safe than sorry.

Yes, it will be fine.

My usual rule is three days after it's been cooled and refrigerated (it'd probably be fine for another couple of days after that, but that's my rule and I stick to it! grin)

Yes M0nica, agree with the simmering, because a casserole can seem piping hot, but the large pieces of meat can still be less than piping hot in the middle. That's why microwaving can be so dangerous in cases like this.

Thanks ladies I was going to put it in the oven for a good time so I shall use it with some nice crusty bread.. saves me thinking of something else for dinner. Next time I'll be sure to freeze it .

Oh God! I love chicken casserole and DH won't eat it! If you're throwing it out can I have it - I don't care how long it's been in the fridge!!

I've got two x two people ones in my freezer greyduster - creamy chicken with mushrooms, bacon, onions and thyme. Very nice it is too.grin

No cream in mine its just chicken with carrots, onions, carrots, celery, new pots and a good low salt veg stock I used cornflour to thicken it as I'm really trying to cut salt and creamy sauces(which I love) out of my diet. Sorry Greyduster it smells too nice to give away wink

When I have leftover food like casseroles and stews, after the first meal I put it in a plastic container and put it in my freezer. No need to eat it all within days and no worries about freshness - and a good supply of home-made ready meals for those days when I do not feel like cooking.

tanith Sat 07-Nov-15 17:20:11

MOnica I normally do that but I forgot about it after it was cooled.

Groan sad!

For lunch today I ate lamb casserole leftovers cooked on Wednesday - I'm sure your chicken will be fine.

If I'm not around tomorrow ......

harrigran Sat 07-Nov-15 18:17:22

I have a beef stew, cooked on Thursday, in the fridge and it will be served at lunch tomorrow. I don't worry about home cooked food but never keep take aways or serve pre-cooked food to guests. As long as it is thoroughly heated I wouldn't worry.

rosequartz Sat 07-Nov-15 18:19:43

Nicely matured with the flavours melding!

As long as it is really thoroughly re-heated - re-boiled - for several minutes

TriciaF Sat 07-Nov-15 18:25:15

I usually make a chicken casserole for the weekend, and we're still eating it for Monday lunch! I put fennel in it too, lots of veg. Stock not cream.

rosequartz Sat 07-Nov-15 18:29:46

We had a very large piece of lamb for roast a couple of weeks ago and were still eating it in various forms by Wednesday.

rosequartz Sat 07-Nov-15 18:30:28

ps the roast dinner was on the Sunday!

kittylester Sat 07-Nov-15 18:37:21

Mine is mostly stock Tricia but finished with a little soured cream.

I have a four day limit, so I would eat it. As long as it was bunged in the fridge pretty soon after it had been started, and not left out overnight.

I go with 3 days, but am a little more cautious with chicken. My OH keeps lecturing me about "heat-stable toxins" - i.e. some toxins produced by bugs are not killed by boiling.

I bought a marinated pork steak for our Sinday lunch. It said it should have been used by today but as it only cost £2.10 I couldn't resist buying it. I am hoping one day out will be ok. hmm

tanith Sat 07-Nov-15 20:49:37

Well I've eaten it and so far all is well, I'll report again in the morning smile or not envy as the case may be grin

It was even tastier than the first day it was cooked.

Ana Sat 07-Nov-15 20:51:25

Of course it will be all right, NanKate! After all, it will be 'Sin'day...wink
