HOW do you listen to music?

DH is actually going to finish work this year and is very keen on modern and fusion jazz. We are trying to work out the best way for him to listen to it. I mostly listen to radio 2 and buy the odd Cd. DH is a bit more 'into' his music and it will be a big part of his retirement. We have not kept up with modern methods of listening/streaming etc and would be grateful for any advice.

A DAB radio - if you can get good reception will give you Jazz FM which is great. I bought DH an I Pod when he retired and he didn't use it for a while but now he has thousands of tunes on it and listens all the time in the car and on his laptop. Also I bought him some cordless headphones so he can sit in the garden listening and not disturbing anyone else.

I use an ipod, found it useful in hospital for blocking out surrounding noise. I keep mine by the bed, nothing like a bit of Nat King Cole for helping me to relax.

My DS has had a Sonos system installed in every room downstairs and, I believe, in the main bedroom. Using the Sonos App on his iPhone, and subscribing to Spotify, he can access all the music that was ever produced in the world and play it in whatever room he's in, or in all the rooms at once. Don't ask me how much it costs - I imagine it's very expensive, but probably just for the initial layout of the speaker installation and wiring. Once that's done, it's just a monthly subscription (I think, don't quote me!)

Oh, and the sound quality is amazing, it just fills the room.

And I think, but I'm not sure, that you can play different music in different rooms.

We are toying with the Sonos system too. I would like to get an idea of cost first but the salesmen seem to hedge round that.

You can download music onto iPhone/iPad/laptop and make your own playlists. ITunes and Spotify are the apps I know about but I am sure there are more. I have a 'Relax' playlist that I have made up on my trusty iPad and iPhone. Not best quality of sound but great when I need some downtime.

Get your credit card out Kitty go to John Lewis and get a Pure Evoke Dab radio.

We bought one for our DS he liked it so much they bought a second one. Then he bought us one for Xmas, pricey but good quality and easy to set up. It costs just under £100, but ours was half price on a special offer.

Happy listening.

From any radio I can reach.

Our music is all on iPods now. I know it's the modern way and reduces the need for storage etc but I find it frustrating sometimes not to be able to pick up a disc and put it onto a turntable or into a slot to listen to - my fat fingers make it hard to pick the right bits on those tiny screens and I end up loosing my patience with it.

Sometimes laptop if I'm on it I like it in the background, ipod, radio in the car or CD somtimes.

NanKate, we have a Pure in the kitchen but DAB isn't all it's cracked up to be I don't think. And who ever owns Pure is ceasing production now.

Sonos seems to be the way forward for us. But having started the journey I'm leaving the rest up to DH to work out - he's in his element. grin

Our house is sort of open plan and has really high ceilings so echo is a bit of a problem which might be solved with wireless headphones. And, I won't have to listen to DH's choice of music! grin

Sorry to hear that Kitty here in the Thames Valley DAB seems to work fortunately. Hope you get yourselves sorted.

Indi we himself has a Sonos system too. I stopped asking how much it all cost grin

This past Christmas at daughter's suggestion, his gift was a subscription to Spotify. Took him a little while to get the hang of it, but now that he has, he loves it, and future gifts are sorted!

I gather you can make playlists - he keeps calling me excitedly to listen to some or other obscure song he has rediscovered. And storing CDs are a thing of the past.

I have a DAB radio that plays CDs and is a bluetooth speaker so that I can play downloaded and streamed music.
If you have ever bought a CD from Amazon you can download a digital copy free.
