Which vacuum cleaner to choose

Just moved house and the carpets are a luxurious thick pile. My vacuum cleaner (Dyson) rolls forward on it but won't pull back so I need to buy a new one fit for the job. Suggestions please.

I've got a Bissell vacuum cleaner. It has different settings for carpet, bare floor etc. I like it, but it has one drawback, the cord is at the bottom of the machine. Makes it difficult not to keep running over it. In hindsight, I think I should have chosen a cylinder type vacuum cleaner.

I've got a Miele Cat and Dog cylinder and it is excellent on all surfaces. Much prefer it to previous Dyson.

I have a Henry and it nearly removes carpet and sub floor so I don't think it would agree with thick pile , my carpet is 37years old and rather flat

Sebo, if funds permit

Agree with Gagagran, Miele Cat and Dog excellent.

Love my cordless Dyson Animal.

Another vote for the Miele here!

Miele too, daughter bought one after trying mine said it was better than her Dyson.

We've just bought a Miele Cat and Dog so I hope it's as good as people say. Collecting it from the shop tomorrow.

I do also have my eye on a Dyson hand held animal; think it's a DC58

I've just got a little robot hoover, I've called him Boris. He is fantastic, does the job for me. Keeps on top of things until the cleaner comes with Hetty. So Boris and Hetty keep my home tip top. smile

Love my Miele cat and dog. Best I have ever had

Another thumbs-up for Miele Cat and Dog. Does a super job and intelligently designed. Had it seven years. Prior to that, had a Henry Hound which was great but died minutes after the guarantee ran out. Prior to that, a massively heavy Dyson that did a useless job picking up dog hairs. Used have to hand brush stairs to get get them clean.

I agree with Dara - have had my Sebo for years, much better than any other cleaner I have used. Guess they have probably enhanced them since I bought mine as well.

Yes Miele cylinder for me had it for years and still as efficient as ever.

suzied Wed 22-Jun-16 10:15:16

Another vote for Miele vacuum cleaners, I had a small one for years, gave it to my DD when I upgraded to a bigger one ,it's still going strong. I have got through lots of vacuums over the years and this one wins my vote. Get the bags from eBay or espares.

Gtech cordless is the best thing I have ever bought. Fantastic after my heavy Dyson. It is a pleasure to use every day. We have now bought a hand held one for th stairs, skirtings, curtains. I have very painful joints and the vacuum is so light to use. My DH uses it too which is a bonus!

omajane Wed 22-Jun-16 10:22:41

Does your Dyson not have two settings on the part that touches the floor? Mine does.

Lilyflower Wed 22-Jun-16 10:33:23

Just bought a Dyson Animal and would heartily recommend it. It does not need pulling back as it sucks up everything ahead of it and goes up to the edges. It is the only vacuum cleaner I have had which works as well as a broom on a hard floor, too, due to its ability to go right up to a wall or cupboard. The Animal has a mega dust capacity and a fabulous attachemnt which has rotating sweepers for the handheld stick. It truly is a beast and well worth the extra you pay for it (though look for offers. I got £80 off on a part exchange.)

P.S. Don't buy a Henry. Just don't.

missdeke Wed 22-Jun-16 10:37:23

So agree with you Tudorrose my Gtech is the best thing I have spent money on, seriously considering their lawnmower too.

annodomini Wed 22-Jun-16 10:47:48

Visiting my sister, I was very impressed with her Gtech cordless - better than my cordless Dyson which is OK for my small house, but I'm coveting that Gtech!

(First time message poster, long time reader of your wise words...)
Wanted to add my praise to the GTech brand - have had the vacuum cleaner and hand-held gadget for ages and love them. No longer do I put off hate vacuuming. I have also recently bought the lawn mower and strimmer and they both do a fine job on our grass. Cordless, lightweight and easy.

Cerocer13 Wed 22-Jun-16 10:51:26

Dyson cordless every time. Might be expensive, but I love it. My two daughters have bought one too.

Charleygirl Wed 22-Jun-16 10:53:22

Another massive vote for Miele Cat and Dog. I have that one upstairs and an ordinary Miele downstairs so that it does not have to be carried up and down stairs. The only downside is the cost of the bags.
