How much do you spend each week on food?

I find I'm spending more than usual on the weekly shop, there's only two of us but I can get through anything between 90 to 120 pounds a week on food shopping - no wine or 'extras', just food!
In fairness, we do eat well, everything home cooked, balanced, nutritious but very little is spent on meat as we both prefer fish or veggie based recipes. And I don't shop at Waitrose or Marks and Sparks either!
Interested to find out what is other peoples 'normal'.

Our supermarket shopping varies and about the same as yours - there is only two of us too and we vary our shopping between Tescos and Morrisons depending on who is giving us the most money off vouchers grin

We are trying to be quite careful at the moment because we do have plenty of food in the freezers and cupboards and should eat it all up.

However, I was astonished when I watched 'Eat Well for Less' with Greg Wallace and Chris Bavin last night, to hear that the family saved more per week than we spend on average (£120 per week). I think it was a family with two children, although we only saw one child.

Just the 2 of us , between £90-£120 a week.

And me. This getting boring!grin

Isn't there anyone who spends less and can give me some wrinkle? I always thought I spent too much but it seems I'm average

We do a mix of Tesco , Co-Op and Aldi for our shopping, we don't do one big shop anymore but do for instance love the fresh bread in the Co-Op so dip in and out of shops.
Don't spend nearly as much per week as some of you although we do a 'paper goods' from Makro once every 3mths. I'd say on average we spend £75 , don't buy a lot of meat but(not OH) eat lots of veg and salads. We don't drink so no wines included. I

£225 to £250 per week but there are 4 adults and 3 children and the youngest is dairy intolerant so costs a little more, thats at Tesco but if I go to Aldi it is drastically reduced.

Around £70 pw but hardly buy any meat, only a little chicken and fish for DH and def no red meat. I'm veggie so can eat very cheaply and neither of us drink either. I was shocked at the £235 pw the family on last night's show spent.

I shop in Aldi every week and spend about £75/£80. That's for two of us. It includes dog/cat food and household cleaning stuff etc.

Once a month I go to Sainsbury and stock up on the things we like that Aldi doesn't stock. I only spend about £40 though.

I used to spend a lot more when we only had the one supermarket nearby which was Tesco. Aldi saves us 30% on our food and drinks spend.

whitewave Thu 28-Jul-16 20:40:36

There is an Aldi near us but the parking is a nightmare. I also HATE food shopping with a vengence and get it delivered.

kittylester Thu 28-Jul-16 20:41:43

I spend about £160 in Sainsbury's which includes wine, the odd dvd, cd, book, t shirt, game for the dgc, baking tray, roasting tin etc, etc. And probably £30 at the butcher's. I rarely shop in between times. There are just the two of us but more often that not we have extras in the form of daughters or sons or friends.

Hugh's War on Waste starts again tonight on BBC1 (9pm)

(I think it is about packaging tonight)

nanajennie Thu 28-Jul-16 20:56:13

How much extra on top of shopping do you spend on take away or eating away from home?

gettingonabit Thu 28-Jul-16 20:57:52

We spend about £80-90, I think. Not particularly frugal but not extravagant either. Dp shops cheaply, and likes biscuits, crisps, etc as well as the usual mince, chicken etc. I tend to cook from scratch a lot but the same old things.

I like sushi which is relatively expensive. I'll have that a couple of times a week. I eat out occasionally, get the occasional takeaway.

My fridge is usually almost empty and I top up every day rather than do a big shop. I waste very little.

Jalima Thu 28-Jul-16 20:58:45

We don't have takeaways (apart from fish and chips once in a blue moon) but we do eat out sometimes (not extravagantly, mostly a pub meal or the garden centre).

NanKate Thu 28-Jul-16 20:59:04

I feel rather ashamed to say that I haven't a Clue. I just stick the card in and put in my pin. We do shop at least twice a week.

If we become incapacitated we will have it delivered by Ocado or similar and then I will know. smile

3 of us and a cat here. We shop mainly at Tesco, the cost can vary between £65 and just over £100 per week, depending on when certain things that we don`t buy weekly run out. Plus Madame Mia is getting very fussy over what she eats these days. On top of Tescos, I spend between £10 and £20 in town on a Saturday, but that`s mostly on little luxuries to snack on over the weekend. I buy a mixture of named brands and own name brands.

merlotgran Thu 28-Jul-16 21:08:00

We don't have takeaways and only eat out once or twice a month. We usually grow a lot of our own veg but haven't done much this year because I needed to 'rescue' a couple of borders from building work done last year.

Next year I'm hoping the new area we've set aside for veg growing will be in full production.

ninathenana Thu 28-Jul-16 21:17:09

Three adults usually but at the moment four.
Like kitty my main shop often contains extras that are neither food or cleaning products. Average is £80 a week with a top up shop of about £30. So everything is £100-110 week.

jenn Thu 28-Jul-16 21:19:08

I'm with you Nankate, no idea!!
Do I include horse and dog food or just food for one?As long as I stay in the black I'm not working it out damn as sure they cost more to feed than me.

Alima Thu 28-Jul-16 21:31:14

There are just the two of us plus 3 fussy cats. Generally spend around £100 per week in Sainsbury's. Rarely go to the retail park and stock up on various bits at Poundland. Eat out sporadically and seldom have a takeaway nowadays. Neither of us have the big appetites we used to have. More often than not a salad or omelette does me. Only buy alcohol at Christmas now too.

Indinana Thu 28-Jul-16 21:32:51

God, I haven't a clue! We tend to shop as we go - we gave up doing a 'weekly shop' when we retired. I keep a magnetic board with a shopping list tear off pad on the fridge and every time we run out of something or think of something we need it gets added to the list. When one of us is popping down to the supermarket we tear off the list and take it with us - usually adding several other items to it! I guess we're lucky in that we have half a dozen major supermarkets within about a 6 mile radius, so 'popping' to the supermarket is often a daily thing, or at least every second day. We have a takeaway probably once a week.

GandTea Thu 28-Jul-16 21:46:36

WE don't worry about what food costs us, we just buy what we fancy or eat out. We probably eat one meal out every other day, odes that count in our food bill ?

Lillie Thu 28-Jul-16 21:53:30

We have Waitrose pretty much on the doorstep and I shop every day, as well as picking up my free cappuccino and copy of The Times! I probably spend around £20 each visit for two of us, I know because I always use contactless payment. I then do a big £60 shop at the weekend.

hulahoop Thu 28-Jul-16 22:06:01

For two of us about 70-80a week we eat out once or twice and sometimes a takeaway don't drink so no alcohol in that we eat a lot of chicken and veg and fruit but we also enjoy our treats
