Tipping delivery men.

Just had a delivery from John Lewis. Two boxes; no setting up or installation involved. Dropped off and signed for in the porch. Was they expecting a tip do you think? I never know what to do.

Gosh! No surely not. I do not tip anyone very often. I am not really mean but there is that balance of supporting 'low wages' by employers (often restaurants) saying the tips make up the wage etc. and appreciating work or a service 'over & above' what you have already paid for.

I did recently give two men £20 for a drink. They had been creating a new pond in the garden over a few days but did stay longer and do some extra bits (at their suggestion, not mine!) to make the pond look even better.

I would not dream of tipping delivery men.

I don't think they expect a tip but I usually tip delivery men because they are often over-worked and very poorly paid.

I'd be bankrupt if I tipped delivery men! I do tip at restaurants, in taxis, at the hairdressers. It's odd, really, to think of where tipping is the norm and where it's not. I always used to give something to the binmen and milkwoman at Christmas, but decided not to this year. I still feel a bit guilty about it, for some reason! The paper delivery girl still got her fiver in a card.

I always check on the local custom when we go abroad, as well, so that we don't over or under tip. It was such a relief to find they don't tip in Australia - it was dear enough!

No,no,no. Why is it that only certain groups of workers expect tips. We do not think of tipping nurses, shop workers, librarians, the list goes on. If the assumption is that they are in low paid jobs then this is the issue to be addressed not giving tips.
Why do hairdressers expect a tip, we pay for the work they do. I would only tip if I received a service over and above what is required.

I would much rather pay more for the service provided to give all workers a good standard of pay without having to rely on tips.
Is free p&p something that is required by us or the retailers? If they had added £5 to the new hob that was delivered last week would I have even known?
Having said that, no I didn't tip the delivery man but I do tip the paper boy, the postman and the bin men at Christmas.

Thanks for the feed back. I was just paying for some items in a hardware chain store the other day and as usual the sales person ringed a section on the receipt about giving feedback on the service I had received. Then the lad gave me a printed name card so I would be sure to get his name right! He only put two things through the till and was just doing his job! Cheek.

I would only tip for service above the normal. If they are just doing their job, no.
The last tip I gave ( £5) was to a porter at Warners. We were both struggling to walk or carry anything at the time and nothing was too much trouble for him and started our break off well.

Wouldn't cross my mind to tip a delivery man.

I never tip delivery men. My sister tips everybody and even feeds workmen when they do jobs for her consequently her decorating takes twice as long as anyone else. She likes to make everyone a personal friend believing she geta better service.

PRINTMISS Mon 30-Jan-17 15:54:00

The only workman who gets anything from me is the window cleaner and his mate, and that is a free cup of coffee. We are the last to be cleaned on this particular round, and he appreciates it, don't think we get any personal service though, but I quite enjoy the chat.

Howjado You obviously don't receive a lot of parcels.

Ana Mon 30-Jan-17 16:07:58

Hermes delivery people are halfway back up to the road before I've even got to the door - they obviously don't expect a tip!

morethan2 Mon 30-Jan-17 16:15:35

Oh dear I just tipped the John Lewis men who struggled with taking a mattress upstairs but only a fiver not enough for 2 cups of tea

Wobblybits Mon 30-Jan-17 16:33:07

Morethan, £5 was very generous, but worth it it he put himself out for you.

As a nurse I was tipped by a sweet elderly lady once, I had helped her pack her case for return to her care home that morning when she asked me to pass her purse. "You've been so kind dear so I want you to treat yourself to something really lovely" And with that she pressed a twenty pence coin into my palm?

Jane10 Mon 30-Jan-17 16:39:39

Yes I've tipped some delivery men but only those who have really gone above and beyond the call of duty. I also tip the lovely Polish man who brings our ironing back. He responded by bringing his birthday box of chocs to share with me! I was a bit taken aback and only took one. Maybe he was tipping me? I suspect my tip had been unexpected by him.

Wobblybits Mon 30-Jan-17 17:21:07

I do tip my hard working car valet guys whenever my car is worse than is should be or the weather is awful.

tanith Mon 30-Jan-17 17:34:10

I wouldn't tip a parcel delivery man but if it was a heavy item, fridge, bed etc if they did a good job and took care of my house I would tip them. I do tip the guy who delivers my chinese takeaway I happen to know he gets paid just for meals delivered and not by the hour so I always give him £3, he is always very grateful.

Grannyben Mon 30-Jan-17 19:19:50

Judypark, I think that's lovely ?
