D H got bee in his bonnet at mo about getting a dash cam. Does anyone else have one? Are they worth having? If so which is the best?

Greyduster Wed 08-Feb-17 15:38:50

Good Lord, no. What do they do? We have enough bits of tech in our motor to keep us on our toes; there is an indicator for everything apart from telling you when to reach for another sweetie, and it is so sensitive it frightens the life out of me when it suddenly shrieks for no reason that you can fathom. I sorely miss the rear parking camera we had in our last car, though.

No, but I have seriously thought about it. I'd like to record the person who overtakes me on a double white line when I'm already doing 60 on a normal road, or the one who is heading towards me because they're talking on their mobile - and then I'd report them, because I'm fed up with bad drivers!!!

Devorgilla Wed 08-Feb-17 16:22:35

I am considering getting one for front and back, given that, being over 70, I am obviously a much greater liability on the road. I just want to be able to prove it 'was the other guy - you know, the young one'.

We have one, Hewlett Packard F300, we've had it for at least 3 years. It has an excellent picture. We gave evidence to a bus company after filming a car driving into a bus, saved the poor bus driver his job.

I have had one for the last couple of years - never go out without turning it on. It saved my license last year when a cyclist pulled out in front of me and I knocked him off his bike. He claimed that I should have stopped, but my dashcam proved that he pulled into my path without looking.

My neighbours dashcam proved some very interesting appalling behaviour, when he watched back what had been done in his car when he'd taken it into a local garage for a service. Without that footage, he'd never have known why he had no treads left on his tyres.

Ankers Wed 08-Feb-17 17:20:59

Yes. DH wouldnt be without his.
Never had a problem with it.
It records the conversation in the car too!
He will tell you what model it is when he has next been out in the car.

Greyduster Wed 08-Feb-17 17:30:42

Sounds interesting. Do they have to be professionally fitted?

Willow500 Wed 08-Feb-17 17:36:11

My husband has one - as does my son - in fact he posted several videos last night on FB of stupid driving. They're both on the road a lot so definitely a must these days. They don't need to be professionally fitted Greyduster - it just plugs into your cigarette lighter and suctions to the windscreen. i don't go out enough to warrant one really.

Ours records sound as well but DH turned it off, I suffer from a potty mouth sometimes when driving especially when I come upon an 'idiot'!

POGS Wed 08-Feb-17 20:48:16

We are thinking of getting one after a close encounter a couple of weeks ago.

Deedaa Wed 08-Feb-17 22:12:35

DH got one for our car. I suspect it's so he can prove it's my bad driving if I have an accident!

Anya Wed 08-Feb-17 22:17:08

Yes. Don't know what make and I'm not gong outside at this time of night to check it. Will post make tomorrow.

seacliff Wed 08-Feb-17 22:18:14

I don't have one yet, but think they are a good idea. There is no arguing when it's on camera. Not quite the same, but Jeremy vine was involved in a road rage incident recently when on his bike. The "Lady" in car was filmed from camera on his helmet, and was found guilty.

My younger son has one. He is a doorman in pubs and clubs and wears a body cam. His body cam footage has been used as evidence several times, so it seemed natural to him to get a camera for the car. Looking at left-handed's post makes me think we should consider one. His wasn't very expensive and just sticks on his windscreen.

Katek Thu 09-Feb-17 09:26:14

I haven't yet but DH has had one for a couple of years. He was involved in an accident some time ago and dashcam evidence then would have been helpful.

Humbertbear Thu 09-Feb-17 10:05:34

We have one. Very useful. Some insurance companies lower premiums if you have one

Thingmajig Thu 09-Feb-17 10:06:27

DH is wanting us to get one too, I think for all the idiot drivers around our town ... there seems to be an inordinate number of centurion/half-blind drivers here who pull out wherever and whenever they see fit, causing mayhem!
Sound would have to be off ... he starts his ranting before we've even left our street!!! I drive silently of course.smile

We got a dash cam after being knocked across the top of the dartford bridge by a bulgarian lorry driver. A few weeks later another incident with a foreign lorry on the m2 in kent. All happened fast and lorry drive on, but on checking the camera later on once Again it was a bulgarian lorry.
There are many accidents in kent with foreign lorries driven carelessly so a car-cam will show what happened. Would recommend.

Anya Thu 09-Feb-17 10:21:47

Blimey, does that mean Bulgarian lorry drivers are just as bad as our home-grown ones! Perish the thought!!

The dashcam habit started in Russia to prevent police corruption when the officers stopped cars and wanted bribes. However, they seem to me invaluable now to record the selfish and downright dangerous driving one sees nowadays, not least from the two wheeled Bycras.

Anya Thu 09-Feb-17 10:33:56

Is 'Bycras' some new term of insult Lilyflower?

I have every sympathy for our Lycra-clad fellow road users, having lost two friends to bad drivers and been knocked off my bike twice by total idiots. The last time I was just cycling along happily when a car overtook me and immediate turned left directly in front of me. I braked sharply but still hit her rear door, wrecking my front wheel. She first said she didn't see me and then accused me of 'going too fast'. No way was she intending to take the blame, but luckily there were witnesses, one an off-duty traffic warden.

vampirequeen Thu 09-Feb-17 11:11:28

We have one and wouldn't be without it especially around Bradford where they seem to have their own version of the Highway Code.

Smartcookie1 Thu 09-Feb-17 11:46:12

I think they are an excellent idea since we were hit by a young girl going through a red light, admitting that she had done so at the scene and then denied it to the insurance company. She had even told me that she had gone through light as she was unwell and returning from work early! So her bad driving cost us £500 in excesses as no I dependant witness. Bring on the dash cams.
