Jersey Royals..

Haven't looked today, but the last time I looked they hadn't got here yet. Hope there are some left! Our local Tesco's sold them in packs last year, and only occasionally loose, which I much prefer.

I know what you mean sue1169 - it does seem hard to believe - don't they have to call them something else if they're not from Jersey? (As if that would necessarily make a difference. Cynic, moi?)

The Jersey Royal season begins in November with planting under glass. The main outdoor crop is planted from January to April with harvesting from the end of March through to the July. The peak of the season is May, when up to 1,500 tonnes of Royals can be exported daily
a type of potato grown in Jersey which has a Protected Designation of Origin.

The Jersey Royal new potato is the only potato that carries the EU Protected Designation of Origin mark of authenticity. This was awarded in part, as a recognition of the unique methods of production.

The ones we had last year (at great expense!) were very disappointing.

After two or three tries, from different shops, we went back to buying Charlottes, a much more reliable spud for flavour.

Sad really, we used to look forward to the new season Jersey Royals.

Ditto Phoenix...really not as tasty as they were..isnt it something to do with them not being allowed to use seaweed now in the growing process?...

We stayed in a nice hotel on Jersey, but there were never any Jersey Royals on the menu. We were disappointed to say the least.

Why can't they use seaweed?

MIL's next door neighbour always used seaweed on her veg garden, results were wonderful!

Just ate some and I must say they do not have the taste that they used to have years ago. Perhaps they are trying to produce too many, it used to be a real treat years ago but now they are in every supermarket.
Egyptian potatoes were always very nice too but we don't seem to see them any more.

Jalima really strange that you just mentioned Egyptian potatoes, as I was going to and then didn't.You never see them now, they were slightly floury and very tasty.

We used to be able to buy them loose, not packaged.

I don't bother with Jerseys now - no flavour. Pembrokeshire new potatoes (tato newi - spelling) are nice - but you have to live in Pembrokeshire!

Cornish new potatoes are good too.

The last few years Jerseys have not tasted of anything much (and asparagus usually comes from Spain).

I use Kerr's Pinks , bought from the farm shop 4 doors up the street and grown on their own farm .

Actually most asparagus seems to come from Peru. It's the one vegetable I'm really fanatical about buying British.

We had Jersey Royals for lunch today with trout in lemon butter and caper sauce, accompanied by sugar snap peas and baby corn. Lovely.

Year-round asparagus seems to come from Peru but the British asparagus will be in the shops from about now for the season.
