So what makes you laugh out loud?

Having recently completed the advertising survey for over 50s, I was reminded that we are so often stereotyped - not least in the humour department. This got me to thinking about what we find really funny - I am sure there will be a diverse range of responses - which will further illustrate we are not a homogenous, age-defined, brain-declining bunch!

Things that have made me laugh out loud recently have been ...

Clever wordplay and definite 'naughtiness' on Gransnet - I do love funny - and still kind - to-ing and fro-ing here.

Gifting my DH ' Game of Thrones Series 1 DVD as a birthday present (missed it on TV, but it has been highly recommended to him by several like-minded friends) only to have him describe it as 'Lord of the Rings with tits' in my hearing. When I told DD1 of this, she seemed horrified for a moment, said "Euuugh, that's about children! " and then corrected herself with "Oh no, I was thinking of Lord of the Flies!"(There's a good literacy teacher for you!) And yes, I did tell her that her generation haven't invented sex (a line I stole from my own MIL!)

When I am texting and the word 'lovely' gets change to 'lively' because of predictive text - adds a bit of spice to several messages!

C'mon then - what about you? grin

All sorts of things, especially slightly surreal humour, but word play and even slapstick now and again.Probably why the Snickers ad with Mr Bean amuses me.?
I think humour is the defining thing about being human, no animals have it, even the intelligent ones.

lemongrove - that Snickers advert with Mr Bean still makes me laugh every time and it is quite old now ..

I watched 'The Upstart Crow' for the first time on Monday night and loved the wordplay in it - first time for a long time that I have encountered a really cleverly written comedy, but have probably missed a few over a period of very busy years.

Christinefrance Wed 13-Sep-17 10:03:37

Definitely word play for me, not slapstick. Love the funny things animals do especially my dogs.
Must admit to a bit of dark humour too, think it comes from being a nurse. Have to be careful who I share with,my daughter is a mental health nurse and totally gets it.smile

downtoearth Wed 13-Sep-17 10:10:16

My brother and I share the same dark humour we are both very dry and sarcastic with each other when we get together its belly laughs....I love observational humour and word play

MissAdventure Wed 13-Sep-17 11:00:45

I find humour in most things really. Not keen on very satirical stuff, but love laurel and hardy, and you've been framed type stuff. Must be awful not to 'get' funny.

Imperfect27 Wed 13-Sep-17 11:08:23

A.n.other example for me would be the radio show ' Just A Minute. Not such a fan of 'Mornington crescent,' but generally love repartee and satire.

MissAdventure Wed 13-Sep-17 11:09:48

Oh I love 'just a minute' and used to also really enjoy 'whose line is it anyway'

shysal Wed 13-Sep-17 11:16:02

'Sorry I haven't a Clue' has me laughing out loud as does 'Would I Lie to you'. Also Phoenix's humourous tales. And they all manage to be funny without any swearing! smile

Imperfect27 Wed 13-Sep-17 11:17:44

Yes, we should have a GN comedy award for Phoenix grin

"Round the Horne" never fails to make me laugh out loud.

MissAdventure Wed 13-Sep-17 11:29:23

I never enjoyed red dwarf, the mighty boosh, or Mrs Brown's boys.

paddyann Wed 13-Sep-17 11:33:56

old Billy Connelly videos, and it doesn't matter how often I've seen them I still laugh,

the Meercat ads ,the latest one with the pub fight is hilarious

some of the things the GC say ,on the way back from school GD2 asked me about boarding schools...because other Gran went to one....she wanted to know if you had to go to boarding school to learn how to get bored ...lol

ninathenana Wed 13-Sep-17 11:38:49

I laugh at most of the things mentioned but have never enjoyed slapstick or farce, they make me cringe.

nanaK54 Wed 13-Sep-17 11:55:04

Imperfect yes, thank you that's the one grin

devongirl Wed 13-Sep-17 12:06:11

Terry Pratchett's Discworld books (RIP Terry sad )

JackyB Wed 13-Sep-17 12:07:13

Mrs Brown's boys had me laughing out loud only last week, but I never found Red Dwarf funny either.

I have a book of unintentional wordy jokes which always cheers me up (Such things as "Judge rules over nude beach" are involved)

And once I was in hysterics for ages over a silly joke:

>>Two flies on a wall - one looks down at the other and says : "Your man's undone!"<<

Imperfect27 Wed 13-Sep-17 12:18:10

JackyB - that joke made me laugh out loud!smile

>> What do you call a fly with no wings? A walk!<<

Alypoole Wed 13-Sep-17 12:38:53

"Would I lie to you" always makes me laugh out loud. Never understood Mornington Crescent but love the rest of the show.
Did anyone read "Bonjela on my fanjo" on Mumsnet- it was hysterical!

nanaK54 Wed 13-Sep-17 12:40:40

Old Peter Cook and Dudley Moore sketches grin

eazybee Wed 13-Sep-17 12:51:03

The Matt cartoon in the Daily Telegraph; John Sargeant, Jeremy Vine (and others) in Strictly; most episodes of As Time Goes By; Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer. Upstart Crow is brilliant.
