What do you think your role is in our modern society?

Teetime Thu 22-Mar-18 13:30:14

Voluntary community work for me.

Ilovecheese Thu 22-Mar-18 14:00:50

How much does society value me? Well, as I am a baby boomer, society seems to regard me as responsible for all its' ills at the moment.

maryeliza54 Thu 22-Mar-18 14:03:56

What is society? My value varies depending on which subset is doing the valuing

M0nica Thu 22-Mar-18 14:29:40

I do not see myself as having a role in society. I am Society in the sense that I am part of the mass of people that makes it up, but I have never seen myself as having a specific role. I have done different things as life has gone on, almost always done several at the same time and I will continue to do so.

My current role is soothing a very angry daughter who has problems at work.

kittylester Thu 22-Mar-18 14:34:12

Ooooh, Monica, I m trying to do the same and not succeeding - shall we swap?

Agus Thu 22-Mar-18 14:41:26

I am about to hang out some bedlinen as opposed to using a tumbledrier. hmm

M0nica Thu 22-Mar-18 14:44:56

kitty, It would bring some variety into the conversation, even if the subject was similar!!grin

gillybob Thu 22-Mar-18 15:21:29

My role is to work and look after the family. Nothing special. I don't think society would suffer in any way if I wasn't part of it.

kittylester Thu 22-Mar-18 15:25:24

That is NOT nothing special gilly! It is women who do just that who are the backbone of society. Where would we be if it wasn't for people who care?

Agus Thu 22-Mar-18 15:26:24

gilly working and looking after a family is extremely special. Don’t sell yourself short, regardless of society, your family would be devastated without you and your input to society is a plus.

Sometimes I feel like giving you a good shake ( in the nicest possible way) and DRUM SOME SELF CONFIDENCE IN TO YOU grin
Your a nice, more than capable woman. Start believing it.

M0nica Thu 22-Mar-18 17:45:55

*gillybob, aren't you doing what most people are doing? . Society is nothing if not the the sum of its members and nothing else. None of us on our own is anything, it is the mass of us all doing our part that makes the difference.

Society is like the sea, one drop can do little but when every drop works together it can eat continents.

Baggs Thu 22-Mar-18 17:52:07

My role is living my life thus: doing no harm, taking no shit. Same as it always has been.

Gerispringer Thu 22-Mar-18 18:07:29

I hope this is not part of some research project as the variables haven’t been clearly defined. What do you mean by “role”? “modern society”?

travelsafar Thu 22-Mar-18 18:22:45

I feel valued by the members of a club i help organise. I feel valued by work collegues although i only work one shift a week. I feel valued by the elderly people i care for. I especially feel valued as a person by my darling sister, my niece , her daughter and my children.

sparkly1000 Thu 22-Mar-18 18:56:08

What is the "modern society?" Social media? Fashion? Older people's input into grandchildren care, local community actives? Aspire to being a good neighbour?
Your question is so vague, maybe if you could qualify it a little more you may get more responses.

Bluegal Thu 22-Mar-18 19:22:39

Strange question, Justtryingtomakeyourlifebetter...? My role in society is just as it has been all my life. To be a good upstanding, pillar of the community. To help my family and others as much as I can. Are you insinuating at a certain age it stops?

MawBroon Thu 22-Mar-18 19:30:20

There is a difference between “society” and “ the society” - which society do you mean?
And is there a purpose to,your question?

I don't think society would suffer in any way if I wasn't part of it.
I think it most certainly would

and so would GN

I think the two most important roles we have are our work ( paid or voluntary) and human relationships ( family, friends, neighbours and other folk)

harrigran Fri 23-Mar-18 09:21:32

No role whatsoever. The younger generations see us as selfish and taking away from them. The NHS just want us to go away as we are a drain on their resources.
We should not vote because we are incapable of getting it right.

GracesGranMK2 Fri 23-Mar-18 09:28:51

I don't really have any sense of society these day. Our lives seem to have become very tribal.

gillybob Fri 23-Mar-18 09:40:11

Oh dear , I don’t think I can cope with these kind ( and very over generous) comments ! grin

On a serious note . Life goes on though doesn’t it ? I have asked myself honestly what difference would there be if I was no longer here ( and I don’t mean here, here confused) . Okay so my DS and DDiL would struggle with child care for a while , my dad would have to use taxis ( jeez that would push him over the edge) my sister would have to fend for herself , DH would still get the metro to work at stupid o’clock but he could probably pack in work eventually too so that would be a bonus ,DD would have to put her new baby in nursery for an extra day or 2 ( and wash her own kitchen floors) ..... but other than that ?

kittylester Fri 23-Mar-18 09:54:34

gilly, I think your post proves the point.

All society is a weave of different strands.

What is important is that people care - you do. Some people care in a political sense - seeing that as way to make society better, some care in a sense of carrying out caring roles (paid and voluntary!) some people care for their family who will pass that caring on in their lives.

Some people don't care at all and they are probably the ones who need the most care from the rest of us!!

IYSWIM confused

And, on that note, I'm off to see if I can find any of DD's discarded Care Bears and to have a lie down.
