Changing your phone number

Hi I have just changed my mobile phone number due to 4+ spam calls a day. This is mainly my fault due to having a home based business and using my personal mobile phone number and address. It's now still on the internet and 5 years since I retired! You live and learn -I should have used a different phone for business use.
Problem now is who really needs my new number? Have informed the bank, vet, updated the dog's microchip company, and given new number to family. Feeling a bit birdbrained atm any help appreciated. Thanks x

You don’t really need to tell anyone, once you have phoned them your number will be on their phone too, they can then save it.

You have my sympathy. I’ve had the same landline for 50 years and the same mobile number for over 20 years. I can’t imagine what it is like to change your number. Have you told your hairdresser and dentist ( mine text before an appointment). I’ve had several different email accounts but I don’t think I’ve lost anyone on the way. How would I know?

Its my first ever change since getting a mobile years ago so I'm struggling with this. Thank for the replies.

Situpstraight yes that works for certain people/ organisations but if for instance my GP texts about certain things if I haven't needed to call him he won't have my number

Happened to me about three years ago, I was getting over 20 spam messages and calls a day, nearly drove me mad. I tried to weather it out but in the end gave up and rang and changed my number. I didn't ever have any business dealing or anything like that so no idea how it started. Have to say 02 were excellent and did it all for me within an hour at no charge. I just texted family and close friends and the rest gradually as required. It was a good way of weeding out numbers I no longer needed. I am still very wary of giving out my number yet when ordering on line a lot of companies insist on it . I give land line where possible .

ninathena I hadnt thought of that, but I must be living in a parallel universe , a GP who texts you??

Crikey, I’ve never heard that before! Let’s hope it catches on and my GP starts it.

I would be surprieed if GPs send texts because of confidentiality issues

Nannarose Thu 01-Nov-18 07:16:11

Our GPs text an appointment reminder, and I think they find that very helpful in reducing missed appointments.
I assume it's not used for anything really confidential. Theoretically the fact that you have an appointment at all is confidential, but most wouldn't get too bothered about that.

Probably no need to change phone numbers now that new regulations are in place from the beginning of October. We have not had one spam call since on either house phone or mobile.

Karanlouise Thu 01-Nov-18 11:05:26

Our GP texts us for appointment reminders. Hospital does the same too. Agree withClementine that once you have informed family, friends and key medical people, the rest will be addressed as you go along.

Don't you have a list of numbers on your phone? Couldn't you go through that and see who you have missed?

Our GP has texted to say they are going to phone at a certain time. They didn't but it sounded like a good system!

Harrigran please tell us more about the new regulations. They don't seem to work though as we still get a call most mornings to tell us our phone and broadband are not working properly! Why do they keep calling when they know we are not taken in?

harrigran Fri 02-Nov-18 09:22:27

The broadband scam comes from abroad so may take time to prevent.
Ofcom have put in place new rules since 1st October. Go to Ofcom.org and you can read how it works.

Nonnie Fri 02-Nov-18 09:27:28

From Ofcom's website: "Unfortunately, some firms base themselves overseas to avoid UK rules and do not make use of the TPS register. If you are receiving unsolicited live telesales calls which you believe to be from overseas firms you should still contact the ICO as they may be able to help you."

So it appears nothing has changed, we still can't stop overseas callers like the ones which call us most mornings to tell us our broadband has a problem!

Look at your call and text logs .. that will tell you who needs your new number!

I've had no cold calls since I bought my very loud whistle,
Wonder why that is ?

Nonnie Sun 11-Nov-18 14:05:37

petra a word of caution, apparently blowing a loud whistle down the phone is an offence!
