Hello, and good wishes to all.

This item came as part of an auction job lot bought by my mother. She had it for years, I've had it for years, without either of us having the faintest idea what it is!

It's made of brass, and as you can see could do with a clean blush

Is that square straight bit a blade, or sharp in any way ?

Nonnie Sat 05-Jan-19 17:22:43

Could it be part of a buckle?

I think there is some way of searching Google with a photo, perhaps someone can tell you how?

EllanVannin Sat 05-Jan-19 17:27:29

Could be part of a horse's harness ? Brass.

Thanks for the responses.

No, Ellan not sharp at all.

Nonnie be a damn big buckle!

I have asked someone who is pretty knowledgeable about antiques and such like, he has no idea.

For info, it is about 22.5 cm (9" ) across the bottom, and about 17cm (7" )high, not including the handle.

Nonnie Sat 05-Jan-19 17:38:23

Ah, I didn't know it was that big!

phoenix Sat 05-Jan-19 17:43:42

Sorry Nonnie I did try asking Mr P to hold it to give an idea of size and scale, but he was "busy" hmm

I tried the Google picture search but it did not find anything.. just suggested a locket!!

muffinthemoo Sat 05-Jan-19 17:52:10

The shape cut out within it looks like a common shape for architrave? A cutting guide perhaps?

kittylester Sat 05-Jan-19 18:03:25

phoenix, it's obvious to me that it's a 'thingy'!

phoenix Sat 05-Jan-19 18:04:29

GA completely confuddled!

phoenix Sat 05-Jan-19 18:07:02

muffin but why make it out of brass? Why the handle? Surely too small for an architectural architrave?

kitty behave!

DHs grandma had something similar. It was for putting military uniform brass buttons through when polishing them so polish didn’t go on the uniform.

Nelliemoser Sat 05-Jan-19 18:15:31

I was thinking of a buckle or such like .

phoenix Sat 05-Jan-19 18:20:17

J52 & Nelliemoser too big, see measurements in previous post!

Elegran Sat 05-Jan-19 18:31:14

J52 I was going to say that. My father had a button stick (see pic) for polishing buttons too. This thing could be for polishing a bigger buckle? You would thread the webbing belt through the hole, leaving the brass buckle on the outside, then the Brasso wouldn't mark the webbing.

Elegran Sat 05-Jan-19 18:32:47

You could clean the brass on a horse's harness with it, as well as a military belt.

phoenix Sat 05-Jan-19 18:46:26

Thanks for the suggestions, but don't think any have nailed it.

Kateykrunch Sat 05-Jan-19 18:49:55

Its obvious, its a moustache drawer oner!

Lisagran Sat 05-Jan-19 18:50:30

Variations of brass polishing / uniform protection items here?

phoenix Sat 05-Jan-19 18:54:59

Not anything like it, are they Lisagran? But thank you for posting them.

phoenix Sat 05-Jan-19 18:56:17

Kateykrunch grin!!!

Elegran Sat 05-Jan-19 19:31:54

That one on the left is a similar shape.

Elegran Sat 05-Jan-19 19:32:24

The hole is, I mean, not the shape of the whole thing.
