Simple question but possibly less simple answer!
If I get rid of my virgin tivo box would either of these gadgets allow me to record and store programmes?
If yes, which would you recommend?

Pretty sure the answer is no. You can watch things like netflix and prime live but they have no facility to record.

FlexibleFriend is right.
We are researching the same thing.
In order to record we will either need to buy a PVR (Tivo equivalent) or get a new Smart TV that allows recording onto a memory stick or hard drive.
We have also considered giving up recording programmes and films that we never have time to watch and just sticking to iPlayer etc.

To use chrome cast and Firestick and other gadjets like them... to watch catch up TV or Netflix etc... the programmes have to be 'streamed' through tablet or phone or computer.

Firestick plugs into any tv HDMI port and then streams via WiFi. It comes with a remote control. Once set up (through computer or phone) it streams via Amazon/Netflix etc. You don't stream through computer/phone once it's been set up. You just plug stick in and choose your programme. My OH has it set up on his tv in bedroom.
A Humax box could be the answer if you want to record programmes, my Dad only has basic tv service and he uses Humax - it does give some Freesat programmes too.

I record using my Humax Freesat box, although, that being said, I rarely record anything these days. iPlayer and other on demand channels are all I really need.

Thanks for all the helpful comments.
I don't watch a huge amount of tv but like to choose my time. I also record films to watch with DGCs when it suits us (Friday or Saturday evenings).
It sounds as if the Humax box might be the best bet!

Just as long as media on your Tivo box isn't supplied via cable, and you have an aerial or satellite dish supplying Freeview or Freesat signals, you should be able to use a Humax recorder to record broadcast TV programmes. You should look for Humax recorders (I don't know of any alternatives to Humax) that you also connect to your broadband router (by ethernet cable or WiFi) to get streaming services. If you don't buy a WiFi enabled Humax recorder, Firestick and Roku can be used instead and come with remotes. Chromecast is controlled from a smartphone or tablet. You may find GC wanting to use your phone to change channels with a Chromecast.

I would advise you to talk to Virgin before cancelling your Tivo contract and make sure you understand what services will be removed and what subscriptions you might have to continue to pay.

Thanks nana for a neat summary!
I'm reasonably happy with what I have but if I could pare it down to what I actually use and pay accordingly, I'd be fine!
Will keep pondering and will speak to virgin media.
