Smart Meters - are they better than they were?

I am being pestered again by Eon to have a smart meter although I told them 2 years ago to take me off their list.

I have been concerned about hacking, about being stuck with the same supplier, about whether the meter can tell me anything I don't already know.......

Can anyone tell me about the pros and cons please.

We have an unsmart smart meter. We changed supplier six months after it was installed so it no longer works. Not that we ever looked at it or consulted it.

Years ago DH bought one of those little 'OWL' meters that displayed our power use. We placed it right by the kitchen door. Since we have always been careful with energy and do not leave lights on etc, it showed that our power consumption ticked away at a low level unless we turned the dishwasher or washing machine one, when, predictably, it rose. Since I normally only use the washing machine twice a week with full loads and much the same with the dishwasher, there wasn't any need for saving there.

The little meter continued at eye level by the kitchen door, but we just stopped looking at it. One day DH noticed it wasn't working and discovered the batteries were flat and beginning to corrode so clearly had been dead for months - and we never noticed.

A few years ago my husband thought we ought to get one. I’d read adverse reports so said ‘no’. So far we’re glad we didn’t bother - articles on them haven’t been reassuring. We’ve now decided to hold off forever or until we have no choice!
