Walking sticks

Why is it, people who use a walking stick deem it necessary and appropriate to use it as a pointing tool? I've just walked through a supermarket car park and witnessed a young man get hit across the head by some elderly lady wielding her stick to point out her car to her friend! Incidentally, the woman was walking quite briskly at the time so beggars the questions, does she really need the walking stick?

Maybe it just gives her confidence.

Yes! I guess it's ancestral! Maybe holding one conjures up memories of when we used clubs!

I guess it's become an extension of her arm.

Thanks GNetters, either way it was bloody dangerous! The poor bloke is now in ED, will definitely need stitches and could have lost an eye! It's up to him whether he takes the matter further, when all said and done, intentional or not, it was assault. My OH and I administered first aid and took him to the hospital, he has our contact details for future reference as we both witnessed the incident!

Maybe the walking stick users amongst us could take heed??? ?
