What to buy DH for our Golden Wedding Anniversary?

Plans for our Golden Wedding Anniversary have been a bit of a disaster.

We would have had a big family 'bash' under normal circumstances but, as that is a no go currently, we decided to go to our favourite hotel in Suffolk and buy ourselves a piece of art from a nearby gallery that we like, as our present to each other.

We can't get a room at the hotel so have to put that plan on hold.

I've racked my brain for a small, inexpensive but lovely present to give to dh on the day until we can get to buy whatever it is, whenever it is, in the future.

Anyone any ideas, please?

It will be our 50th WA next year so I had better get my thinking cap on too.

For our wedding in 1971 I gave DH a small silver propelling pencil I think it cost £5.00 from an Antiques shop. He still keeps it safely.

I bought dh a chunky silver bracelet, kate. It might be in my jewellery box along with gold bracelet he bought me!

some vintage port made in the year you were married? I buy froma Vintage Wine site for special birthdays quite often and you dont have to spend a fortune .2 fab 40 year old wines in aset with tools and a lovely velvet lined box for my SIL was under £100

If your husband likes whisky, you can have bottles engraved with a message.

We have a tradition, for our silver anniversary we chose, and bought together, a silver photo frame. In it we put a miniature photo of our wedding day, with a personal message to each other tucked in the back.

For our ruby we did the same, the frame having two small rubies each placed in a love heart on the top two corners of the frame.

And now we have a gold frame. That couple in those frames never seem to get any older.

Nice idea, spangler.

I usually buy him a 'good' whisky for our wedding anniversary,, marydoll, but I bought him one for his birthday as we were going to buy something together for our anniversary. Best laid plans and all that.

He's not keen on port paddyanne.

For our Golden Wedding I bought my husband a pair of really good wellies and a boot bag. He’s a bird watcher and unlike most of the presents I have bought home over the years, these get used regularly.

How about a copy of a newspaper published on your wedding day.

Kitty, the ‘Not on the Highstreet’ website has a wide range of interesting things which can be personalised with names, dates etc.
Might be worth a look.

Do let us know what you decide upon.
Congratulations on your forthcoming 50th anniversary. ?

Whisky sounds good to me and maybe gold cufflinks with both of your initials on,well, that`s if he wears them.

A plant with ‘gold’ leaves....?

Crazygran Sun 30-Aug-20 09:47:23

Unfortunately my husband never lived long enough for our Golden wedding but my son and daughter in law went to the Lake District to the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon. It rained on both occasions.

How about a beautiful paperweight or e.g. a glass bowl, with gold (or gold look -alike) swirled in the glass?

kittylester Sun 30-Aug-20 09:49:51

I always forget Not on The High Street!!

I really want something a bit silly but significant - they might have just the thing.

I once created a hamper for a golden wedding anniversary - it was filled with things from the supermarket with 'gold' in the name. So golden syrup, golden grahams, McVities gold biscuits. I was surprised at the wide choice available.

Sorry I can’t help kitty ....I just looked in to get ideas!
DH is very hard to buy anything for.?
Our golden wedding anniversary was earlier this year, lovely holiday abroad cancelled of course, and we hadn’t planned presents ( as neither of us particularly wanted anything.)
Neither could we do anything with family at the time, with lockdown, so will hope to have our special anniversary next year now ( will it be any better?)?

Sheilasue Sun 30-Aug-20 10:17:06

We agreed on our golden wedding 2 years ago not to buy anything for one another we went for a lovely meal instead

Is there a rose plant featuring Golden Anniversary ? I'm sure it would give pleasure as you watch it flowering each year.

mphammersley Sun 30-Aug-20 10:34:55

What about a personalised word print. Fill it with all the words that are special to him. Family names, his interests, places you have been. I have been thinking of getting one for my husband, and his hobby is photography, so the words would be placed in the shape of a camera. Not explained very well.
Is there a hobby he has always fancied trying? Clay modelling, whittling, painting? You could always get him started with a book and the basics to get him started.
Whatever you decide, have a wonderful golden wedding celebration together, congratulations!

Isn't it lovely to see " Goldens ?"

My late H thought he'd see 40yrs so that he could give me his grannie's ruby/diamond ring----sadly I have it anyway, but it'll be passed down. It must be about 100 years old as it is.

It's our 40th wedding anniversary today and we've had the same dilemma in that we wanted a trip of the lifetime to celebrate but Covid put paid to any planning for that which I guess is a blessing in disguise. I wished my husband "Happy Anniversary" as soon as I woke up this morning and he replied "What shall we do - give it another 40 years?"

Clairefontaine Sun 30-Aug-20 11:05:18

Our 50th wedding anniversary is on 19 September. Like others, we cannot mark it in the way we had hoped, for now. Instead, we have booked a lovely country air bnb for that weekend( 3 nights) and plan to explore the area, which is new to us. No presents, just some very nice restaurant bookings and new places to discover, all researched online and via recommendations. And a family Zoom in the evening. Kitty, even if your favourite hotel is not available for the date desired, there are also excellent other accommodation options. We only booked a week ago and are delighted with our choice. It is the fun of going somewhere new( and not too far) which, to us, is better than a tangible present we may just put away in a drawer and never look at again. We will remember fondly the honeymoon package deal in Majorca for £35 that we had booked in what turned out to be an unfinished hotel. We were aged 20 and 25 and not daunted. Our air bnb this time is positively luxurious in comparison but just as lovely, fun, and new to us. Happy Anniversary, whichever way you choose to mark it.

There is a rose called Golden Wedding in the David Austin site. A vigorous bright floribunda, with large golden flowers.
I've just looked online.
