William and Kate’s rail trip

AIBU I cannot believe this. The royal train costs a fortune. The only good this will do is bolster the RF. The number of folk in dire straits is unbelievable-how on earth will a visit from this pampered pair help I wonder?

lemongrove Mon 07-Dec-20 18:33:25

I disagree. That’s what the royal train is for, to whizz them around the country, visiting factories/ hospitals and the like.
In fact I admire them for doing this when they could actually hide away claiming Covid means they can’t do any visits.
They are doing what the Queen used to do when younger.
I’m really a republican at heart but think if we have a royal family then they should be around meeting and greeting the public and not sat around in palaces at our expense.
So good on them.

sodapop Mon 07-Dec-20 18:58:03

I agree lemongrove it's another can't win situation of course,

lemsip Mon 07-Dec-20 19:05:41

Lemongrove, I agree with you!

Alima Mon 07-Dec-20 19:08:42

I say good on them too. I expect most of the people who see or meet them are really bolstered by their visit. Obviously some will not think using the royal train is cost effective. Isn’t it better than having one but never using it?

Jaxjacky Mon 07-Dec-20 19:09:38

I agree lemongrove, no visibility, they’d be accused of hiding behind royal privilege.

merlotgran Mon 07-Dec-20 19:21:48

Cheaper than a private jet.

Pantglas2 Mon 07-Dec-20 19:26:09

It must gall those who wish to see the royal family disappear that people still turn out to see them wherever they go. Surely this was work, what they get paid to do?

Chewbacca Mon 07-Dec-20 19:30:16

At least they're not flying by private jet whilst pontificating about saving the planet.

eazybee Mon 07-Dec-20 19:38:44

I believe the royal train is expensive so it is good to see it used, and it doesn't look that luxurious to me.

Grany Mon 07-Dec-20 19:56:45

Britain: How can we pay tribute to poorly paid workers who've risked their lives to keep us going during a pandemic?

Govt: How about getting super rich people to wave at them from a luxury train those workers paid for? Or burning £50 notes in front of themThinking face

Fellow rebs, let us hijack the #royaltraintour hashtag.

Calling at:

Scathing
Ridicule
Ideological Gap
Propaganda on Sea
Caste Entrenchment
before arriving at Abject Sychophancy.

Presumably, this doesn't include security costs.

@LoveLolaHeart

The cost per mile of royal train travel varies, but a 2017 trip by Prince Charles from London to Cwmbran cost £130.84 per mile. If the cost per mile for the Cambridge's COVID Tour was the same as Charles' 2017 trip, that would mean this Pandemic Express could cost £163,550. twitter.com/BBCNews/status…

None of them live outwith.

Prince of wales my arse
Duke of Edinburgh my arse

Love Wills 'CONCERNED FROWING FACE' that he does.
Hand gestures for bonus points.

A lot of royal schtick is based on premise that they listen & UNDERSTAND the country.

But all they ever do is spout bland platitudes that reinforce existing power structures..

On the #RoyalTrainTour - how big is the entourage of folk ?

It's not just #Kate & #RosesLOVERBOY swanning around - it's press, flunkeys, fawners and servants.

Have they all been tested?
Why are they breaking the law ?

8 carriages.

In tow is a large media / press pack.

They're not allowed on the train so have to drive.

William's commitment to environmentalism doesn't extend to giving the supine press pack a seat on his train.

Needless to say they don't complain.

Predictable post Grany

They visited Tier 2 areas. ✅
No advance notifications so no crowds ✅
A timely thank you to Covid service personnel ✅

Nicola Sturgeon won’t have liked it but they weren’t in the T3 Glasgow area. Good PR exercise.

Grany Mon 07-Dec-20 20:11:52

Ms Sturgen first minister was none too happy about WK Visit She said the Scottish government made sure Royal household were made aware of Scotland's restrictions but the Royals seemingly defied the warning.

merlotgran Mon 07-Dec-20 20:12:31

What's a 'concerned frowing face?' hmm

Smileless2012 Mon 07-Dec-20 20:13:02

Good post lemongrove.

Chardy Mon 07-Dec-20 20:35:46

Would have been good if it had happened 6 months ago, but why now??? Royal Family have been conspicuous by the absence. I wouldn't expect to see the Queen out and about, but the rest of them.... Except on Remembrance Sunday, I don't remember seeing them.

Eloethan Mon 07-Dec-20 20:44:48

I agree with you Newquay. It's just a marketing exercise and I think it's wholly inappropriate.

merlotgran Mon 07-Dec-20 20:45:09

Six months ago Covid was at its height and the whole country was in Lockdown. Hardly the time for royal visits.

I had to check they went to Berwick it's in Northumberland a Tier 3 area.
Just goes to prove the rest of us are in lockdown but they can prance about on their own little train.
They were probably a bit bored at home. I mean a small mansion is OK for a few weeks but then you just have to get out!!!

Urmstongran Mon 07-Dec-20 20:50:05

Yes not good 6 months ago, but now, pre-Christmas to say ‘thank you’ in T2 areas (where people can meet up anyway and drink in pubs etc) seems appropriate.

Urmstongran Mon 07-Dec-20 20:52:43

I was meaning T2 Scotland - where Nicola Sturgeon objected to their visit. Edinburgh is fine.

Alegrias2 Mon 07-Dec-20 21:15:03

We don't have Tiers in Scotland, we have Levels. They went to Edinburgh, which is Level 3. No drinking in pubs.
NS didn't object.
Other than that, you're spot on UG

I'll take your word for it, Grannygravy

Good post, lemongrove.
Part of their role is to boost morale. Those who don't like it can always stay at home.
They don't cost that much - pence per person per annum.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 07-Dec-20 21:35:38

I am a royalist, no apologies.
