What are you doing to celebrate International Women’s Day?

When my mother was still with us, she, my daughter and I would meet, discuss local, national and international affairs that were having an impact on women, my mother would talk about her lived experience and we would toast each others womanhood, our appreciation for having each other and wishing for all females access to good health care, excellent education facilities, freedom of movement and freedom from threat or actual various forms of abuse and violence.

We are continuing this family tradition. My daughter and granddaughter will have to be outdoors this year, let’s hope for a dry, calm day, don’t mind the cold. At 6..30 this morning it was -1%.

I've never known anyone who is British ever doing anything for IWD.
A Polish friend who I worked with in a school celebrates it. Her daughters would give each of the female staff a rose. It was very sweet.

I’m usually seeing friends. In the past, we would be part of celebrations in the town centre. Often dressed as suffragettes. Given our current lockdown, I may slightly breach guidance and meet two, rather than one friend to walk and discuss IWD

I’ll be cooking, cleaning and looking after my men just as every good woman around the world should be doing.

Hope you are wearing your hard hat Missfoodlove

lemongrove Sat 06-Mar-21 09:21:03

I have no idea what date IWD is, nor do I care tbh.I have never needed a day to celebrate either my own or anyone else’s achievements/ideals/needs.
Men don’t all get a great deal in life, either as boys, young men or older ones either.

Billybob4491 Not a hard hat, just an apron and rubber gloves.

Crikey this thread is going to cost me a fortune.

lemongrove Sat 06-Mar-21 09:39:43

I suspect that most of the British public have no interest in either IWD or a mensday.

Ellianne Sat 06-Mar-21 09:41:01

Coincidentally it is always my birthday!!! And very occasionally Mothers' Day to boot.

Will be working in the supermarket as usual.

There are usually some get togethers and events on here, but Covid has stopped that. The ROH has some interesting sounding online activities and I am hoping to join in with some of those.

I won’t be doing anything different, I never have. What date is it this year?

trisher Sat 06-Mar-21 10:24:50

Wow and I thought there were a lot of feminists on here. Other IWDs I have met up with friends and been part of marches and choirs, singing about period poverty and the song from the 2018 Women's march on Washington. "I can't keep quiet" www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyx4Lpz_vjg&list=RDMmc9QbpqCeI&index=3
This IWD I've a number of on-line opportunities including yoga and meditation. And I'm doing a pop up choir on Zoom

timetogo2016 Sat 06-Mar-21 10:25:30

My thoughts exactly lemongrove.
What a load of bull.

Urmstongran Sat 06-Mar-21 10:27:26

Nothing.

trisher Sat 06-Mar-21 10:40:47

Could I point out to all of you who are saying there is no need for IWD the International in the name. There are countries where women are still subjected to violence, raped, discriminated against and mistreated by men and the authorities. International Women's Day is a chance to show we stand with them and with all who are persecuted. It's not just the UK.

It is always 8 March

Peasblossom Sat 06-Mar-21 10:48:51

Did not really do special days. One day and then go n your way.

It’s how you live and what you do every day that counts, isn’t it?

Lucca Sat 06-Mar-21 10:49:30

Some rather dismissive of IWD comments on here . Will people be celebrating Commonwealth Day ? And if so why ?

Callistemon Sat 06-Mar-21 10:51:34

8 March?
I was doing that most womanly of things, giving birth. ( Am I allowed to say that? Isn't IWD rather a sexist construct?)

Must remember to phone DC.

In Scotland, there is a celebration at our Parliament every year, usually the nearest Sat to 8 March. Women citizens from all walks of life gather in the chamber, listen to guest speakers, Q&A session then a celebration in the Garden Room. There have been girls choirs to entertain us in the past.

This year it is on line.

P.s. I am not a fan of Labour at present so this is not a cover for electioneering. ?

Peasblossom Sat 06-Mar-21 10:55:44

See, I frittered about for the whole of 3rd March before remembering it was DS birthday ?

And then it was only because he sent a text saying thank you for card.

Just not a special day person.

Ashcombe Sat 06-Mar-21 10:58:27

This normally would be linked to the Women’s World Day of Prayer and women would meet in churches or other places of worship. It was ecumenical and once, when I lived in Staffs., we celebrated at a local abbey with the nuns which was interesting.
