I read this morning in a reply to an article in the evening standard that reported that pregnant people were not getting vaccinated that the term ‘pregnant people’ was used until a suitable word for the sex could be found as ‘woman’ was the name of a gender. Good grief what do you think?

I never read the Evening Standard.

ExDancer Sat 31-Jul-21 11:41:58

Good grief!
Enlighten me - if the words 'man' and 'woman' signify gender,
what do the words 'male' and 'female' refer to?
(Aside from that, I can understand someone who's pregnant might hesitate over having a vaccination, not just a covid one).

I think if it wasn't so ridiculous if would laughableshock

Doodledog Sat 31-Jul-21 11:47:56

It’s ridiculous, but yet another example of the erasure of women. Or erasure of generally accepted terminology in favour of a tiny but vocal minority.

In case anyone is scratching their head wondering why anyone would want to use the term ‘pregnant people’ when clearly it is only people of the female sex who can get pregnant, it is to protect the sensitivities of pregnant women who identify as male.

I see no reason why midwives shouldn’t call transmen ‘people’ or ‘parents’ (on the rare occasions when midwives are likely to encounter people in this situation) but to change vocabulary for the rest of the population is a step too far.

The Covid vaccine has been tested and has been found to
be safe if you are pregnant, no medical process is 100% safe but why stack the odds against you by not taking vaccine.
Reported in the news today from Brazil, unvaccinated pregnant women who catch Covid have a very high mortality rate, babies are being delivered by C section and surviving

Just tragic that this is happening in 2021

eazybee Sat 31-Jul-21 11:53:44

It is a nonsense, perpetuated by a very vocal, intolerant and undeservedly influential minority.

GagaJo Sat 31-Jul-21 12:00:44

And off we go on another trans exclusionary thread...

Doodledog what you are saying makes more sense than anything else I’ve read on this subject !

Blossoming Sat 31-Jul-21 12:31:13

gagajo I recall that grannygranby has a transgender child, so I doubt that was the intention. I didn’t comment on what appeared in the Evening Standard as I haven’t read it. I’d need to see what the original article said and what the reply said first. I would also be interested to know what grannygranby thought of it.

And off we go on another trans exclusionary thread...

Who has excluded whom, and from what?

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 31-Jul-21 13:02:28

Totally ridiculous and as others say pandering to the vocal ‘in your face’ minority. I think it started in the US?

ElaineI Sat 31-Jul-21 13:08:41

Scottish Government have been blasted for saying pregnant people should have Covid vaccine. Because of saying people not to do with the vaccine.

MerylStreep Sat 31-Jul-21 13:09:10

Just keep fighting against this twaddle ?

Inclusion of trans folks should not be at the exclusion of women

Females/Women get pregnant, carry the child and give birth, not people

Hithere Sat 31-Jul-21 13:12:44

Not again

Perhaps we need to use Lina Lamont’s words from Singing in the Rain, where she says, “I ain’t people! ”

Galaxy Sat 31-Jul-21 13:19:24

Sorry if women discussing the reason for their oppression upsets you.

I just get extremely peeved and frustrated that women have continually had to fight for recognition, votes etc only for a minority section of the population to erase words associated with the Female Gender!!!!

NotSpaghetti Sat 31-Jul-21 13:32:27

But I'm a person and a woman.
I don't feel excluded (though not pregnant at my age thank goodness!).

I don't see why women would feel excluded?

Galaxy Sat 31-Jul-21 13:42:56

Because women are allowed a word to describe the class/group to which they belong. As are gay men, etc etc.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Sat 31-Jul-21 13:47:11

Quite so Doodlebug a male who identifies as a woman and is pregnant is a rare beast indeed.

A vociferous minority who are very aggressive and losing sympathy for their cause.

Galaxy Sat 31-Jul-21 13:50:49

The term is being used to include transmen not transwomen. So those who are of the female sex but identify as Male.

Mollygo Sat 31-Jul-21 13:59:27

Well said GG13 and lovebeigecardigan1955!
