I am having 8 guests for an evening meal, but no idea what to give them for dessert especially as I don't bake. May have to be shop bought. Any ideas ?

Eton mess (just as nice with raspberries, which are around at the moment) or a fruit crumble? Both very easy.

Elton mess - easy and delicious - my favourite !!

Fresh fruit, cheese (3 types:blue, hard and creamy) biscuits and wafers. Or, if you can get to a good supermarket, top notch ice cream.

Ice cream with hot espresso coffee poured over. It's called affogato. Top with cream and a chocolate coffee bean

Don’t want to sound rude Ladyleftfieldlover but I would be disappointed to go out for an evening meal and be offered fresh fruit and cheese and biscuits. Perhaps to finish off with, but I like a nice pud first.

I agree on the Eton Mess, shop bought meringues, lots of fresh berries, perhaps a drizzle of some compote, lashings of fresh cream and ice cream..........easy peasy and looks really posh ?

I often don’t serve a pudding but do a cheese board with figs etc and then serve coffee with homemade fudge.
If you’re not confident then buy a good quality chocolate brownie and serve warm with cream and raspberries.
Elton mess is delicious but shop bought meringues are too sweet and chalky, they spoil the dish..

Calendar girl
My steamed golden syrup pudding, with individual jugs of custard, never fails to please .
Fresh fruit, is available for those grin watching their waist line.

A top quality cheesecake
Pile on the raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, your choice. Serve with a scoop of top quality ice cream. A little jug of pouring cream if you like.

I would go to M&S buy about 3 frozen ones, and some cream or ice cream and be honest and say, I don't do Puds!
No one will complain I'm sure.

Waitros or M&S lemon tart + something else (Eton Mess?) for those who don't like lemony desserts.

Elton mess sounds like a whole new dessert that I would definitely like to try grin. Good for birthday parties if topped by a candle in the wind.

Waitrose do good tarts!
??

Jaxjacky Wed 22-Sep-21 21:13:58

Calendargirl1 I’d prefer cheese and biscuits any day over a pud!
Madwoman I don’t bake either, just buy something, I’m hoping your guests have come to visit you and enjoy your company, not to give you marks out of ten for the food.

Lemon tart, Eton Mess and a cheese board (with grapes!)

My neighbours invited me for dinner after lockdown. When I returned the favour I was really stuck for dessert ideas as it’s not something I often make. I made a strawberry trifle I’d seen on the M&S website. It was simple to make and my guests were so impressed they asked me for the recipe the following week when they had visitors. I had to come clean and tell them it was an M&S “cheat” recipe.

Strawberries and cream Swiss roll, a tub ready of made fresh custard, fresh strawberries, whipped double cream and flaked almonds. I’ve made it several times since for the family and it’s a hit with them all. The grandchildren love to make it.

Here is the M&S YouTube link

Ice-cream tiramisu. No baking, make well beforehand and freeze, put in fridge an hour or so before serving.

No bake berry cheesecake is very easy. Recipe on delicious.com

What about lemon posset? It's easy. You heat up cream, sugar and lemon rind to boiling point, turn down and simmer gently for 5 minutes. Beat in the juice of the lemons and then pour through a sieve, into a jug and then pour into small glasses, or ramekins. The chill. You can make it a few hours before your meal or even the day before.

You need to check a recipe for the quantities.

Serve with some nice little biscuits - I serve cantuccini and maybe a few raspberries on top.
