Just heard on the radio that this grant can be applied for in the case of an unmarried partner who has died. backdated to 2018, applications to .gov bereavement.

Its just been announced this morning ( Today programme r4) and its being backdated. Applications online. Thought it might help fir us all to know. They mentioned £10,000.

My friend is going to apply....her partner died in 2021 ...
It will make a great difference financially for her

How interesting! Never heard of this.

I think it's only for people whose partner was under state pension age when he/she died and died because of an accident at work or a disease caused by work (could be wrong), so not many people will be eligible anyway.

My friends parter died at 49 not in work....from a heart attack at home....she's left with a 12 and 14 year old so think she will be eligible

Sorry, you're right. I misread the eligibility criteria:

www.gov.uk/bereavement-support-payment/eligibility

Assuming that your friend's partner paid NICs, the death doesn't have to have been caused by an accident at or disease caused by work.
