Car insurance - and women drivers

This week's post is by Steph Savill and wonders whether women drivers are set to get a raw deal when a new EU ruling comes out. Are women safer drivers? Should premiums reflect the statistics - or be gender neutral to avoid discrimination...even if some of us will end up paying more?

Pennysue Fri 29-Jun-12 10:48:00

Premiums should be based on the risk. I suspect that you will get insurers who will be gender and/or age specific.

But that will be illegal Pennysue and, if they [insurers] will benefit financially from this new ruling, they are unlikely to complain.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the exclusively women insurers - my premium is still very low this year, and if they assess my risk according to my no-claim history, it should remain so.

My premiums are also very low and just by chance I received my renewal notice yeaterday, and it had gone up to £345.00 fully comp.up £52.00 from last year.mr.glamma stated (as men do ) that I would not get better than that as all premiums had gone up this year again."Watch me says I" so I telephoned the nice young man and told him I wanted a better quote how much do you wannt to pay mrs.glamma don't say nothing as that joke is wearing thin says he!! oh well here goes says I,anything under £300.00 will be good, remember I am on a budget and would hate to have to cancel my business with you,so off he goes and comes back with a new quote of £295.00 so I'm a very happy glamma and mr.glamma has egg on his face. That extra £50.00 goes into my xmas fund and I'm chuffed with myself for being cheeky.I do think premiums should be graded on your experience and driving ability taking advanced courses should bring down payments etc and having a good alarm system should also be taken into account.

Anagram Fri 29-Jun-12 15:48:09

Blimey, glamma, what do you drive? My premium is only £130 for a four year old VW Polo, fully comp. I do use Moneysupermarket.com. to shop around each year, though!

Pennysue Fri 29-Jun-12 16:13:18

Sorry I misunderstood - insurance companies will not be able to discriminate by gender. So women will pay as much as men. My GD has had more "incidents" than my GS!

Greatnan Fri 29-Jun-12 17:11:32

Apparently, women have more little 'shunts', such as happen in supermarket car parks, but they don't cost as much as the high-speed crashes of men.
I suppose the argument could be that each person should be rated individually on their record, regardless of their gender, as Pennysue said.
I love the idea of asking for a lower premium - with so much competition around this would probably work quite often.

Mine £450 fully comp. that is for me and also Bob who is my taxi driver. That is because sometimes I want my mob scooter when I go to work and it needs the electric hoist in my car .

glammanana Fri 29-Jun-12 17:46:19

anagram maybe it is the area even though I live on The Wirral and have a Chester postcode my area still comes under Merseyside, and my car is 2 yr old audi A4 so it's not too bad really.

Annobel Fri 29-Jun-12 18:03:18

Mine went up when I had to admit to speeding offences. sad

Anagram Fri 29-Jun-12 18:06:34

Yes, glamma post code can make a big difference, and engine size of course. Mine's only a little one! (Why is it that every post I make these days seems to be riddled with innuendo? I blame the porn thread...grin)

glammanana Fri 29-Jun-12 18:11:09

anagram innuendo is good for the brain it keeps it ticking over and make's us remember things we have long forgotten about !!! (another innuendo)grin

Anagram Fri 29-Jun-12 18:31:54

Thank you for reading and commenting about my blog. Good to get it off my chest for the moment! And good for you Glamma, Anagram and Jeni re your insurance negotiations.

It looks as if some insurers are starting to up their premiums for women drivers already. Before December many of us will have paid less for our car insurance than our male equivalent but after that date it is likely that most of us are to be arbitrarily charged more.

No insurer prices risk by individual circumstances to begin with. They start with charts of known/likely risk factors such as age, gender, postcode, occupation and type of car; hence the sky high premiums for young male drivers based on likely gender risk re accident and speeding statistics. Then premiums are adjusted for good things like PassPlus training, no claims, garaging, theft devices and so on. And anyone with a poor claims history, speeding offences and so on is required to pay more; that's only fair of course.

But for insurers to be allowed/encouraged to charge all UK women the same as all men for starters is like loading all household insurance premiums with high risk flood potential - it is massively unfair for UK females in my book.

So, when your renewal arrives, I know you'll shop around, either using online comparison sites or a big High Street insurance broker (if you prefer face to face personal service; they should offer the same/similar deals).

If you decide to negotiate a reduction from your existing insurer, like Glamma, be sure it doesn't come with an increased 'excess' ie the amount you pay towards a claim before the insurer chips in. In some instances motorists are underwriting their own insurance this way but only find this out when they need the cover after an accident and it isn't all they need it to be.

And if you have a story about your insurance experiences to share with other women (not just we Grans) I will relay this of course or you might contact me via Twitter or at Facebook.

THINK THE HIGH COST OF INSURING YOUR CAR WHEN YOU ARE OLDER IS SIMPLY A LEGAL FORM OF ROBBERY, THE PRICES HAVE JUST ROCKETED, MAYBE WE SHOULD ALL GIVE UP OUR CARS AND USE OUR BUS PASSES, MAYBE THERE WOULD BE A SWIFT RETHINK THEN, IT IS A GET RICH SCHEME FOR THE INSURANCE COMPANIES WHEN YOU REALISE WE GET NOTHING BACK WHEN WE DONT CLAIM BUT THE PREMIUMS GO UP REGARDLESS, ANYBODY KNOW A GOOD REPUTABLE INSURER???doubt it

Movedalot Thu 20-Sep-12 15:18:55

We always shop around until we get what we think is a fair quote. Mine is due for renewal soon but I don't see why it should go up because I am female as DH and DS are on it too.

Our youngest son has reduced his premium but adding both his parents to his insurance although we almost never drive it. Perhaps this is a tip you could all forward to the young drivers you know who are forced to pay extortionate rates.

I think the decision is appaling. I think it was changed because it was considered discriminatory against men to charge them more than women. My understanding is that it was an actuarial fact that men drivers cost insurers more that woman. So it was not unreasonable to charge them more. Where has common sense gone?
