History book for a 6 year old.

jangly, A Street Through Time by Anne Millard is about a journey along the same street over a period of 12,000 years. A really interesting book, which may be a good introduction to history for your grandson.

Children seem able to take pretty strong meat! My GS, just turned 7, loves Horrible Histories on TV. He is very interested in history so I will try to remember 'A Street Through Time' for him and/or his sister.

jangly Our Island Story by HE Marshall is a real old fashioned story book giving the history of Britain from the Romans to Queen Victoria, designed to be read a chapter a night as a bedtime story. Was a great success for a younger friend in France who was desperate that her children should not miss out on the history of their own country just because they are being educated in France at the moment. Lots of Kings and Queens and battles! Have just bought it from Amazon for my own DGC.

We have just bought our grandson "How to be a Knight" as he is also getting quite interested in history. We've had fun going through it to. It is on Amazon and the reviews were very good.

Ganja I've got that book! Haven't got round to giving it over to grandkids yet as I'm liking it too much.

Will look at that one kittylester, but, trouble is, he has inherited a lot of knights books from big grother. Still, be nice for him to have one of his own.

Pity that Mike the Knight merchandise isn't coming out till next year, as my grandson loves it, so I feel an interest in all things knightly will happen. Will have a look at that book, even though it's a tad too old for him as yet.The 'Not On the High Street' catalogue has a fantastic pop up castle play tent which I'm tempted to buy [even though I've bought far too many presents already this year!].

My grandson loves Mike the Knight too, which prompted the book and, although it looks quite grownup, I think it will work on lots of different levels eg my husband (who could of course be entering a second childhood!) won't leave it alone. Might have to hide it or I shall be handing over a book with sellotaped flaps! Or buy him his own. I've already bought him the Dangerous Book for Boys that someone suggested on another thread

Anyway ...in another alto-ego ...you spoke about being a member of the National Trust? Well they do lots of lovely history books for younger children ...you might try accessing their web-site ...or many of their house's shops are open on specific days leading up to Christmas.

Yes, you're right about the National Trust shops. Haven't been away for a while but, hopefully will visit one of their shops before Christmas.

Saw this advertised in the Telewag last weekend and am considering getting it for my 6 year old GS. "How well do you know your explorers" (£7.99 historyheroes.co.uk) It is a Top Trumps type educational game for youngsters interested in history, written by a history teacher. Going to try it.. All the Usbourne books are excellent too.

When he's slightly older all the books by Rosemary Sutcliffe are wonderful. The Eagle of the Ninth is a novel about Roman Briain and has enthused me and thousands of others about history. Nina Bawden has written some wonderful stories too, and one of the very best is anything at all by Penelope Lively. She began her writing career in children's books. The best one IMP is The Ghost of Thomas Kempe.

Thank you Nsube. I, myself, have got, and adore, the Rosemary Sutcliffe ones you mention, but I will proceed immediately with The Ghost of Thomas Kempe (for me).

I will pass it on to my older GS when I've read it. I promise.

nanapug how did we ever cope with Xmas before GN? What a brilliant suggestion. I have just bought both. The History one for honorary grandchild in France to see if he was listening when his mum read them Our Island Story a year or two ago. The Explorer one for DGS. He is having Benedict Allen's Book of Exploration as main present, which is brilliant but a slightly daunting tome for a 10 year old. This will bring an element of fun into it all. His GF and I read a lot of travel and exploration writing so I shall look forward to playing it with him.

I know these are not history books but if you have a grandchild aged between 9&11 then any novel by Ruth Thomas is brilliant. They may not be in print but you can get them from amazon. Absolutely the very best books for this age group, she gets inside the skin of ordinary children and introduces the sort of experiences and dilemmas which they face. They are tightly plotted and the writing is superb.
