Adrian Mole - 30 years on

My DiL posted on Facebook a picture of DGD reading the 30th anniversary edition of the Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged thirteen and three quarters and this reminded me that I bought a copy of the original almost exactly 30 years ago to take his mind off a nasty dose of chickenpox when he was 11. I read it when he had finished with it and enjoyed it. Sue Townsend has lasted well.

At the moment I'm reading her latest - 'The woman who went to bed for a year'. I think I've read all her books - such a shame she's nearly blind now.

The later Adrian Mole books have just got funnier and funnier. As has most other stuff by Sue Townsend. I am a tremendous fan.

I've never read any of her books until now, I'm reading The Woman Who Went To Bed For a Year, it's very funny.

Something wrong with me - I couldn't wait to finish 'The Woman Who Went To Bed For a Year' and I didn't laugh once! I did enjoy the Adrian Mole books though.

I remember the days when Sue Townsend was 'just' another English teacher in a Leicester state school.

My favourite was 'The Queen and I' - about the Royal family being sent to live on a Leicester Council Estate after a revolution. Hilarious - the Queen Mum getting drunk with her West Indian grand-mother next door.

Sadly Sue suffers from diabetes and is practically blind now- but still lives in the same Edwardian house off London Road- and is a real fighter.
