An English Affair

Am currently reading An English Affair: Sex, Class and Power in the Age of Profumo by Richard Davenport-Hines. It is brilliantly written, totally evocative of the time and explores the Profumo affair in the context of the attitudes and mores of the late fifties and early sixties.
I had almost forgotten the true horror of the prevalent and institutionalised sexism, racism and homophobia that was around. It also reminds me that sections of the press were as hypocritical, cynical and horrible then as they are now.
Has anyone else read it?

No - but I think I might now - recent history which had such an impact at the time is always so interesting. I read what was probably a large extract of the book in a paper a few months ago.

I think I will read that. We visit Cliveden in Berkshire (NT) quite often and he was a frequent guest there. I often think I should revisit the details of what happened back then. smile

I too was horrified at the Kindle price. - will wait till back in UK and maybe get a 'proper' copy - but it is only hardback so far.
