Come on guys. Exercise your creativity. (apologies to MM for those words which are hers)
He drew a short breath and said lightly but softly:
“My dear, I don’t give a damn.”
As he turned from her she shuddered, drew a breath and gathered herself.
She had never understood either of the men she had loved and so she had lost them both. Now, she had a fumbling knowledge that, had she ever understood Ashley, she would never have loved him; had she ever understood Rhett, she would never have lost him. She wondered forlornly if she had ever really understood men and their unaccountable ways. She wondered if any woman truly had.
She had been through so much and now it was clear – it was time to put love and the ways of men behind her. She had made too many mistakes and damaged too many lives.
“I’ll — why, I’ll go home to Tara tomorrow,” and her spirits lifted faintly. With the spirit of her people who would not know defeat, even when it stared them in the face, she raised her chin. I’ll go home to Tara – her first and truest love.
“It is time to mourn my dead and learn from my mistakes” she murmured. And then I will rise again. I will make a success of Tara in this new world of freed slaves. Us women need to find a kind of freedom too. And tomorrow is another day.
