I was picked by Gransnet to review this book, which I received for free. This review is in my own words and reflects my true opinion.

I think this is a great tale that would appeal to children - especially boys perhaps - which tackles the distressing problem of a parent with depression in an adventurous and courageous way. The illustrations are beautiful and break up the blocks of text as do the footnotes here and there.

I am not prepared to recommend this book as suitable reading for a child with a depressed parent though as although in this case there is a happy ending with the father recovering following his suicide attempt I think that to suggest that depression brings the likihood of suicide might make a child very fearful during this period and as parents and grandparents we like to sheild the children from such possibilities
