There are some "old friends" on my bookshelves & Kindle that I treasure. Sometimes I visit them just for a little while (a couple of chapters)& at others we're together for the whole story (again!)
My favourite "old friend" is Precious Bane by Mary Webb, set in early 19thC Shropshire,a country girl born with a facial disfigurement tells the story of her life in fond retrospect.Relish the stunningly descriptive lanuage in this one.
Secondly comes The Greatest Knight by Elizabeth Chadwick.A superbly researched, fictionalised account of William Marshal,medieval knight & confidant of English kings in the Middle Ages. A history lesson & rattling good read.
Thirdly, Blackberry Wine by Joanne Harris , has one of the most interesting "voices" taking its part in telling the story - a bottle of wine! The modern(ish) book takes place in England & France, &, be warned, is best read on a sunny evening with glass in hand - that might just be me tho'.
