Evening all,

Hopefully most will know me, and therefore understand why I have posted this. I'm not especially known for anything contentious, so hope you will all forgive my digression from fluffy topics!

A bit of explanation:The person who emailed this (below) is the person who not only runs our excellent village shop and organises our bulk buying of heating oil,(we have an oil buying syndicate in the village which has worked well in getting a good price.) There was a sign outside the village church today saying "Praying for Kieron Byran". Now, I'm not a church goer, but I totally support this.

(Keith also does loads of other things, for example along with his wife Anne sponsoring 2 children in Uganda, supporting various village things for kids & teenagers, but prefers to keep a grumpy profile! grin )

Quote from Keith:

"Now we've got the cheap oil this month I'd like to ask a favour, its very easy. I'd like everyone to sign a petition to help a friend currently in prison in Murmansk on trumped-up piracy charges. Kieron Bryan is a journalist and was aboard the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise when it was siezed by Russian special forces. He is not a member of Greenpeace, nor is he an activist. Clicking on the link below and signing the petition WILL HELP. Pretty please. And if you could tell your friends, post on Facebook, make strangers do it gunpoint, then all the better.

Thanks,

Keith

I appreciate that we cannot all support all causes, but if you feel that this one is one that you may be able to support, then I thank you.

Have signed it on the Greenpeace website. Link to an article in the Guardian which was put on another thread.

I've read that some of the GP activists were caught scaling a Russian oil rig in order to try and stop oil production and that's why they've been arrested. Whether this is piracy, I don't know, but they certainly done something worthy of arrest.

The juxtaposition of an oil-buying syndicate for cheap oil and a petition to release someone who was apparently arrested for trying to stop oil production doesn't sit easily with me. It seems like a piece of mental disconnect.

Signed and shared.

Done!

j08 Thu 10-Oct-13 09:41:42

This journalist has worked previously for Greenpeace. Does the fact that his role was to video the event really mean he was not an activist?

I would like to see them all released. No way was it piracy.

thatbags Thu 10-Oct-13 09:48:54

I wonder if it might be interpreted as aiding and abetting, jings?

Are diplomats belonging to the countries of the GP activists calling for their release too, or have the home countries accepted that the rule of law must be allowed to progress? Geniune question seeking info.

j08 Thu 10-Oct-13 10:00:31

They're bound to be let out soon. Even Putin has said it couldn't be called piracy. Although there could well be a prison sentence applicable for boarding someone else's ship uninvited. Trespass perhaps? Would think it's all in a day's work for them. Extra publicity too.

Not exactly aiding and abetting. They were most likely all in it together.

Charleygirl Thu 10-Oct-13 10:09:54

I watched "Breakfast" a few mornings ago and somebody's parents related to the arrest were speaking eloquently saying that their son was doing his job and was not involved with piracy. I am not 100% certain if their son was a journalist or a photographer.

I have signed.

thatbags Thu 10-Oct-13 10:14:12

Another way of looking at it: Naidoo goes, the blogger says, "from no compromise to dialogue is paramount".

thatbags Thu 10-Oct-13 10:19:34

Here is what is claimed to be video footage of GP boat ramming Russian one.

Peaceful protest my arse!

thatbags Thu 10-Oct-13 10:23:27

More damning footage. They do not deserve to be released before trial.

thatbags Thu 10-Oct-13 10:28:54

Sorry, but whatever one's views about oil drilling, belonging to a group that is behaving like that, is not morally acceptable. Protest peacefully by all means. Break laws. Accept the consequences.

soop Thu 10-Oct-13 10:40:35

Quite right, bags

j08 Thu 10-Oct-13 11:20:30

They are very little boats, compared to the huge Russian thing! And are n' t they inflatables?!!

I think they are amazingly brave! The Russians behaved ridiculously. Was that gunshots in there? Bloody cowards (the Russians)! shock

thatbags Thu 10-Oct-13 11:43:38

Amazingly brave? No. Amazingly stupid to put other people at risk of capsize in arctic waters.

Why should the Russians on the oil rig put up with trespass?

Would anyone on GN put up with people climbing on their property (boat, house, vehicle?) without permission?

Those ribs (boats) are not just any old inflatable dinghy, you know.

thatbags Thu 10-Oct-13 11:45:03

The "huge Russian thing" is the oil rig, jings. Two of the ribs are Russian ones, going there to have the climbers lowered onto them. The Greenpeace rib, clearly marked, rammed one of the Russian ones. That's criminal.

Aka Thu 10-Oct-13 11:57:35

OFGS

j08 Thu 10-Oct-13 12:28:11

I thought it might be (the oil rig)! grin

I am only on my kindle fire (away from home) so can't see videos too clearly.

Yes. Done perhaps for trespass. Like I said. But not 15 years!

Yes. Brave.

Heroes? shockgrin

Jendurham Thu 10-Oct-13 12:31:50

Come on Bags, keep digging that hole. They are still inflatables. It's not as if they rammed them with the Arctic Warrior. Anyway, the utube footage I saw looked like the Russian coastguard rammed the greenpeace boat.
I was listening to radio five live early this morning where they were interviewing a Russian diplomat, can't remember what his exact title was, but the interviewer queried it. It sounds like the activists will not be even going to court until the protests have been stopped. He actually said the more the protests go on, the longer the interviews will take to decide what to charge them with. He also mentioned the drugs found on the ship, which apparently all ships have to carry by law, morphine. The Greenpeace ship was checked by Norwegian sniffer dogs before it set off from Norway, and nothing illegal was found.
Apparently if there is an oil spill from the oil rig in the Arctic, it will take a hundred years to disperse in that temperature.

j08 Thu 10-Oct-13 12:51:34

Yes. I remember hearing that about how it would n' t disperse. But then someone else said the sea would freeze around the leak and stop the oil getting out. ?!

Don't know about that. But they are trying to protect the seas and the wildlife. That's good enough for me.

Nuclear is the only option at the moment. Until fusion is ready.
