I've read that some of the GP activists were caught scaling a Russian oil rig in order to try and stop oil production and that's why they've been arrested. Whether this is piracy, I don't know, but they certainly done something worthy of arrest.

The juxtaposition of an oil-buying syndicate for cheap oil and a petition to release someone who was apparently arrested for trying to stop oil production doesn't sit easily with me. It seems like a piece of mental disconnect.

This journalist has worked previously for Greenpeace. Does the fact that his role was to video the event really mean he was not an activist?

I would like to see them all released. No way was it piracy.

Are diplomats belonging to the countries of the GP activists calling for their release too, or have the home countries accepted that the rule of law must be allowed to progress? Geniune question seeking info.

They're bound to be let out soon. Even Putin has said it couldn't be called piracy. Although there could well be a prison sentence applicable for boarding someone else's ship uninvited. Trespass perhaps? Would think it's all in a day's work for them. Extra publicity too.

I watched "Breakfast" a few mornings ago and somebody's parents related to the arrest were speaking eloquently saying that their son was doing his job and was not involved with piracy. I am not 100% certain if their son was a journalist or a photographer.

Sorry, but whatever one's views about oil drilling, belonging to a group that is behaving like that, is not morally acceptable. Protest peacefully by all means. Break laws. Accept the consequences.

Why should the Russians on the oil rig put up with trespass?

Would anyone on GN put up with people climbing on their property (boat, house, vehicle?) without permission?

The "huge Russian thing" is the oil rig, jings. Two of the ribs are Russian ones, going there to have the climbers lowered onto them. The Greenpeace rib, clearly marked, rammed one of the Russian ones. That's criminal.

Come on Bags, keep digging that hole. They are still inflatables. It's not as if they rammed them with the Arctic Warrior. Anyway, the utube footage I saw looked like the Russian coastguard rammed the greenpeace boat.
I was listening to radio five live early this morning where they were interviewing a Russian diplomat, can't remember what his exact title was, but the interviewer queried it. It sounds like the activists will not be even going to court until the protests have been stopped. He actually said the more the protests go on, the longer the interviews will take to decide what to charge them with. He also mentioned the drugs found on the ship, which apparently all ships have to carry by law, morphine. The Greenpeace ship was checked by Norwegian sniffer dogs before it set off from Norway, and nothing illegal was found.
Apparently if there is an oil spill from the oil rig in the Arctic, it will take a hundred years to disperse in that temperature.

Yes. I remember hearing that about how it would n' t disperse. But then someone else said the sea would freeze around the leak and stop the oil getting out. ?!

Don't know about that. But they are trying to protect the seas and the wildlife. That's good enough for me.

Nuclear is the only option at the moment. Until fusion is ready.
