How about a 'suggestions' thread for gifts?

I've spent the last few days pondering over birthday presents for my grandson who will be twelve tomorrow. I left it late because I only saw him for the first time in weeks yesterday, although I had asked several times by text. Even he can't think of what he would really like. He's got lots of things that he needs, so this time, rather than buying him a bike or motorised lego, or all the other things I've suggested and he doesn't want or need, I'm going out shortly to get him a selection of books and small surprise treats and put them all in a big box. He's not yet reached the age when his world will expand and he will want to try lots of new hobbies and adventures. Speaking to my family, they have all said the same - internet suggestions for 'gifts for a 12 year old boy' are useless, and everyone has struggled this year. Do you find you are stumped for great ideas for relatives and friends of any age, too? If you jave received or given a really great gift, it would be good to hear what it was, please.

That's a really good idea, Carol. It would be really helpful to have suggestions for presents, especially if you've given something and it's been happily received. If someone has given us a gift which we were glad to have we could mention that too.

There are headings for gifts in the "product reviews" page.

One of the best presents that I have received over the years is one bought for me by DS2 this last Christmas he knows of my love for cookery books old and new and bought me a copy of The Half Hour Cook by Jenni Fleetwood it really does keep true to the title and has some amazing recipies in that are very professional looking, the illustrations are fabulous and realistic,I think anyone would love to have this book in their kitchen,it suits use as when we have been out anywhere for the day we are not tempted to snack when we get home knowing I can put someting nice and tasty to-gether.

This is such a good idea Carol. I know that you and other grans were very helpful to me a while ago when I asked for suggestions for a friend's 60th birthday present. In the end I bought her an aromatherapy lamp to burn essential oils because on reflection I realised that she was quite a tense person but that she enjoyed yoga and I thought this would complement her yoga sessions.

Carol suggested a Sussex trug and kindly sent me the link (I have ordered one for another friend who loves gardening, as well as one for myself). I have written down all the other wonderful ideas and will be using them for other friends and relatives who I know they will suit, depending on their tastes. There was such a wide variety of suggestions that I know gransnetters have an almost unlimited supply of ideas.

I think the reviews section is more permanent and easier to locate?
having said that , while i have your attention my goddaughter (10) is getting confirmed.
She is having a cross and a string of pearls given to her. Any ideas? I am contemplating a Bible, but she may have one.

Anne58 Mon 05-Mar-12 17:32:34

I would think that she would indeed have a bible, but what about a nicely bound copy of the book of common prayer?

JessM Mon 05-Mar-12 17:36:00

Good idea. I will check with her mum
She goes to a cathedral school so that is where the do is next weekend - in the cathedral with a reception afterwards! Do you think we will have sherry with the bishop. SO Barchester towers. Opportunity to flirt with a bishop...

I could make unseemly remarks about having been bestowed with a Bishopric but I wont.

Anne58 Mon 05-Mar-12 17:50:38

Annobel Mon 05-Mar-12 17:52:33

Jacey Mon 05-Mar-12 18:00:27

Phoenix why would it be unseemly? hmm

Anne58 Mon 05-Mar-12 18:04:09

Jacey I think you will have to ask Annobel, I really have no idea.............

Annobel Mon 05-Mar-12 18:31:37

It would not become me to repeat Phoenix's pun. I must have a twisted mind.

Anne58 Mon 05-Mar-12 18:34:42

specki4eyes Mon 05-Mar-12 22:58:15

A hammock! Get a nice soft fabric one i.e. not one like a string bag. Your giftee will bless you every summer afternoon. There's a good website - google 'hammock' and you'll find it.

Anne58 Mon 05-Mar-12 23:09:13

Yes, a hammock is lovely, delightful etc, but as to how it might be a gift linked to a confirmation service.....................?

JessM Tue 06-Mar-12 07:16:07

What does an atheist godmother give at an anglican confirmation...
Visions of me sneaking into a religious bookshop wearing a muslim headscarf as disguise.

I trecked around the Trafford Centre yesterday, looking for inspiration for my 12 year old grandson's birthday today, and found one great present in the Model Shop - must go back there, there's lots of interesting things. He's got an iPod Touch and they had an AppCopter, which is a small helicopter that can be flown by using the iPod as the remote control (there's software to download). The shop assistant asvised caution - the person demonstrating it to shoppers a few weeks ago got it to take flight and it went straight over the balcony and landed in someone's coffee in the cafe below! My grandson will love that! I can envisage him manoevring it over the dining table - typical schoolboy!

JessM Tue 06-Mar-12 07:50:38

oh i saw one in a shop. he will indeed love.
