Where did you hide the bubblegum you weren't supposed to have...

...after you had chewed all the juice out of it?

There was a hole in the plasterboard on the landing wall. We used to put it in there. That old farmhouse that my parents rented for two years has been poshified since we left. I wonder if they found it.

My friend's son used to remove his nappy and push it to the back of the gap beside the washing machine. It was a while before the smell lead them to the hiding place!

Shysal - grin!!

nelliedeane Sun 03-Jun-12 09:13:27

Used to swallow it till my nan told me it stick all my innards together and block up my bum....and if I ate pips from the apple a tree would grow inside me,apparently I used to spend half my time with my hand down the back of my knickers seeing wether my bum had either closed up or have tree roots sticking out of it grin

greenmossgiel Sun 03-Jun-12 09:22:09

And you'd get a proper telling-off for that, nellie!! grin
I used to stick my chewing gum under the desk at school until my skirt stuck to it. I told the teacher that the person who sat at the desk before me must have done it (I LIED!), and she was horrified, saying, "What a disgusting person"! I had to go through the rest of the term with a black sticky mark on the front of my skirt, as my mother couldn't afford to buy me a new one. Serves me right for lying! blush

When we were in Devon in the week, there was a slightly unnerving notice on the door of the garden centre cafe. "Would customers please not leave chewing gum on the undersides of tables. Please use a napkin to dispose of it in the proper manner". shock

Don't get that kind of thing in Berkshire! wink wink grin

I used to be terrified of accidentally swallowing mine for the same reason nellie.

nelliedeane Sun 03-Jun-12 10:11:13

Did they know you where going that day jing and put the notice for you grin

j04 Sun 03-Jun-12 10:13:06

OMG!!!!

I hadn't thought of that! grin

Annika Sun 03-Jun-12 10:18:46

Im with j04 and nellie, didn't dare swallow my chewing gum also, but I was told the chewing gum would wrap around my lungs, and mum wondered why I didn't sleep at night, the worry of it all when you are 6 !!!!!

Jacey Sun 03-Jun-12 10:31:11

Money was tight as a child so sweets were rare ...and gum never!! Told it was a 'filthy' habit ...interesting how times change!

Absolutely hate the 'recent phenomina' (sp?) of white spots on the pavement shock One of Singapore's laws that I like grin

I recently bought an old oak bookcase from a junk shop. Later, when I was cleaning it up I found a piece of chewing gum stuck on the underside of one of the shelves.

I used to put mine on my iron bedframe overnight as a child.

Anagram Sun 03-Jun-12 11:38:44

That sounds like a cue for a song.....! grin

jeni Sun 03-Jun-12 12:36:28

I was like jacey strictly verboten!

greenmossgiel Sun 03-Jun-12 12:52:50

Anagram grin
'Does your chewing gum lose its flavour on the bedpost overnight?
If your mother says don't do it, do you swallow it in spite?
So it's sticking to your tonsils and you're heaving left and right...
Does your chewing gum lose its flavour on the bedpost overnight?'

....warble, warble, warble grin

Anagram Sun 03-Jun-12 12:56:20

Quite, green! grin

harrigran Sun 03-Jun-12 13:22:56

jacey and jeni forbidden in our house too. " Only common children chew gum. My first taste was as a teenager. " I was offered some gum when I was at work at 17 and forgot that I had metal braces on all my teeth, I think it took a couple of days to pick the resultant mess from the wires grin

Bags Sun 03-Jun-12 14:07:16

My mother forbade it as well. That's why we had to hide it inside the walls. Actually, I never liked it much (taste wore off too fast), but one had to be defiant a few times wink

Anagram Sun 03-Jun-12 15:05:02

Same here, Bags - didn't see what all the fuss was about when I eventually got to try some...confused

absentgrana Sun 03-Jun-12 15:22:14

I wasn't allowed chewing gum and when I did try it, I didn't like it. I've never tried bubble gum and don't propose doing so at my time of life. I can't bear the way people (eg Alec Ferguson) look so vapid as their jaws keep churning ceaselessly. When I decided to stop smoking last year, there was absolutely no way I was going to turn to chewing gum for oral gratification [sic] – whether nicotine gum or just mint. [yuk emoticon]

numberplease Sun 03-Jun-12 16:55:16

Confession time. I was never allowed chewing gum or bubble gum, so I used to peel it off the pavement and chew it. The thought of it now makes me feel sick!

j04 Sun 03-Jun-12 17:00:41

I am lost for words Nummberplease

j04 Sun 03-Jun-12 17:01:13

wink grin

Sorry for the extra m there.

Jacey Sun 03-Jun-12 18:40:32

petallus Sun 03-Jun-12 19:18:06

I was wondering how many of you posh girls would say you weren't allowed chewing gum smile

Jacey Sun 03-Jun-12 19:42:18

shock petallus ...as I've already said ...we didn't have the money for sweets ...how does that make me 'posh'? angry
