Gender Selection

I am not often shocked, but I was certainly taken aback to see a post on Mumsnet asking why gender selection could not be made legal, (not for medical reasons, just out of choice).

Greatnan just when you think you have seen and heard it all !!!
What worries me is not only have 'these people' been given the vote they then go on and have children, and if they get their wish they would also pick the sex of their child !!!!!!!
If not for medical reasons then why ?
I wonder if they would choose boy or girl hmm

Greatnan Fri 22-Jun-12 19:39:06

Annika - I am not sure who you mean by 'these people'?

johanna Fri 22-Jun-12 21:45:03

Totally ignorant here.Is gender selection not legal in the U.K. then?

Anagram Fri 22-Jun-12 21:49:35

Are you serious, johanna? confused

j04 Fri 22-Jun-12 21:49:43

Well, how would you go about it johanna? confused

jeni Fri 22-Jun-12 21:53:55

Yes! But only in gender linked hereditary diseases!

johanna Fri 22-Jun-12 22:02:20

Sorry, absolutely not being silly here.
And you have not answered my question: Is gender selection not legal in the U.K.?

j04 Fri 22-Jun-12 22:06:05

No. No way! Not even with ivf.

Surely?!

j04 Fri 22-Jun-12 22:06:58

Perhaps with ivf where jeni indicated.

ninathenana Fri 22-Jun-12 22:07:05

as jeni said

Can I ask you johanna do you think it should be legal ?

jeni Fri 22-Jun-12 22:07:21

Yep!

petallus Fri 22-Jun-12 22:16:10

Interesting question. Some years ago when my daughter was pregnant there was a rumour going around that there was a reluctance on the part of hospital staff to tell people the sex of their unborn child because in those cultures where boys are valued over girls, abortion could then be sought if the sex of the foetus was 'wrong'.

I suppose this would be a way in which gender selection would be legal in this country.

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Anagram Fri 22-Jun-12 22:18:03

johanna, please can you explain why you are so surprised that gender selection (apart from in certain medical circumstances) is not legal in the UK?

j04 Fri 22-Jun-12 22:20:26

But they can't tell the sex of the unborn child until the later scans, can they? Wouldn't it be too late for an abortion by then, except on medical grounds?

Anagram Fri 22-Jun-12 22:21:17

petallus, that would be a very roundabout way of going about it, but I don't think it would render gender selection 'legal' as such.

jeni Fri 22-Jun-12 22:26:05

Jing
With ivf you select before implantation!
Petallus. This is true!

johanna Fri 22-Jun-12 22:43:22

It seems I have the wrong end of the stick. Never crossed my mind that this is/was in vitro, or some such thing, thought it was about people wishing to change their gender later in life. Oh dear ,oh dear, I apologize.

Now, that I know what you mean, no I do not agree with it at all.
Not even with IVF. Not for medical reason(s) either.

I really really admire those people who dare go ahead with this notion.
I would NEVER dare.

And from a very personal view, why do people have IVF.? What is this strange attitude re having children. Why?
" I WILL, I'll HAVE a child at any price!!!!! And whatever else I fancy."

j04 Fri 22-Jun-12 22:45:19

johanna grin (about getting wrong end of the stick*

j04 Fri 22-Jun-12 22:46:23

Oh yes. You do, don't you jeni. hmm

Am I not giving this enough thought? grin

j04 Fri 22-Jun-12 22:48:02

johanna I was getting visions of you advocating leaving girl babies out on hillsides! grin

Anagram Fri 22-Jun-12 22:50:09

I like johanna.

j04 Fri 22-Jun-12 22:51:54

That must be one of the funniest things we have had on Gransnet.

(Not laughing at you johanna. It ^was* an easy mistake!)

petallus Fri 22-Jun-12 22:52:21

Tee hee!

And so to bed!

j04 Fri 22-Jun-12 22:52:34

I need to go to bed. Getting my wotsits muddled up. hmm
