Thanks for three swift responses but what I now realise I failed to was to ask where the song comes from - i.e. is it a refrain or a chorus and what is the original song? The only verse I remember (in full), but not necessarily in the correct order is as below. I have tried Google and many many other old time music hall web sites over the last couple of years with no success.

Then her mama went out La La La La La La La
The her papa went out La La La La La La La
And then the lights went out, even the fire went out
La La La La La La LaLa La La La La

With a rather suggestive emphasis on the final line of La Las.

Thanks for the further comments - like you I also remember my mother singing it and, again like you, quite a number of olderperople I have met in recent years also remember it but "can't quite put their finger on it". All I can do is keep trying.
