Should prisons be made harsher?.

Another thought I am having is prisons are not harsh enough to deter crime.
If beds were not provided and prisons were not heated this would save money and I am sure people would not offend again if they had to put up with these conditions for months or years.
There should be nothing like TV or any other non essential items.

Would this be for ladies' prisons as well?

NfkDumpling Thu 31-Jan-13 22:13:34

Ooh, you stirrer! The human rights lot and Brussels would never allow it. You'll be advocating hanging next!

I do agree though that prisons do seem just a little too soft. And aren't some blokes appealing for nooky rights too?

HUNTERF Thu 31-Jan-13 22:18:48

NfkDumpling

Yes it would be for ladies prisons as well.

I think they have those already Nfk
They wanted access to IVF - there was a thread about it.

Ladies in prison? Visions of nice polite misunderstood girls wearing bustles. Of course they need all mod cons and comfy sofas.

In history, prisons did not have the amenities of which you complain, so according to your carefully thought out argument HUNTERF there would have been no criminals or prisoners then. What's that? There were? oh, must be just another wind-up then.

La-la-la-la - so not listening smile

So Jane they have to make do with a rude magazine and a bottle? Why? Is it to keep their women in line by keeping them fatly pregnant?

NfkDumpling Thu 31-Jan-13 22:29:35

Graceesmum don't forget most houses were a bit short of amenities too.

gracesmum Thu 31-Jan-13 22:32:27

Not my point, NFK - this is a wind up.

Ana Thu 31-Jan-13 22:33:10

Frank, come on now - you're blowing your cover! I was inclined to give you the benefit of the doubt before, but seriously - no beds and no heating....grin

NfkDumpling Thu 31-Jan-13 22:34:00

I know, he's just being Frank.

gracesmum Thu 31-Jan-13 22:34:53

You mean when people say "Now let me be frank....."??grin

HUNTERF Thu 31-Jan-13 22:39:01

Ana

The prisoners could sleep on a stone floor.
You are not expecting them to have lights in prisons are you?.
You will be expecting glass in the windows next.

grin Oh what a wag you are, Frank (or whatever other names you go by...)

gracesmum Thu 31-Jan-13 22:41:32

The punishment is the taking away of a person's liberty. Not making their lives a complete misery. You need decent conditions, classes and worthwhile occupations, and areas for fresh air and exercise. And a good diet.

If this is a wind up, I have fallen for it.

Surely it is! hmm

The prison population would also be drastically reduced if the luxury of food were withdrawn. I'm surprised HunterF hadn't got round to that yet.

Nonu Thu 31-Jan-13 22:46:31

Totally off the wall Frank , what part of Birmingham do you live ?[moon

Ana Thu 31-Jan-13 22:48:18

Me too, jingl, but I think the game's up now....hmm

I wished I had 3 cooked meals a day free of charge. They need to make prisons places which people would not want to return to.
They could also be located on a deserted island.
They could also have prison ships out at sea.
