Red Hats

gracesmum I did read about Red Hatter's a while ago on Gransnet and we did have a few members but can't think when it was we where talking about it,they seem to do such fun things I would love to meet up with some who are members in my part of the world a fabulous excuss to wear a nice hat for the day.

I couldn't join - I get dreadful hat hair!!

I think it is a group formed after someone wrote that poem 'When I get old I will......' which included a line about wearing a red hat with purple dress. It is a poem in praise of becoming an old bat. And if I thought I would become like that in old age I would book my ticket to Dignitas now.

What do you mean "Become an old bat....."?? I am very proud of my old battery-ship! And, frankly, getting old is still a more attractive prospect than the alternative!

I met a lovely group of totally mad 'Red Hatters' in Arizona a few years ago....I just happened to be wearing a purple jumper (they wear prurple) and they greeted me like a long lost friend. I quite fancied the idea until........at local station getting on a train to meet up with daughter I spotted a couple of British Red Hatters, complete with hats and purple accessories.....honestly, two of the most miserable looking women I have seen for a long time. On several occassions I looked up quite deliberately to catch their eye (was thinking of starting a conversation with them about where they were based etc etc) not a dickey bird, nothing. So unless I see a more cheerful example of British ones I shan't be bothering.

I've just (optimistically) acquired a white sunhat with red spots. Does that qualify me as a red hatter - or just a mad one?

I went round a garden in East Angular last year, and a whole coachload of ladies in purple wearing red hats descended from a coach, some of them looking far too young for the poem. They were all very happy and friendly. I thought it was a lovely idea, but some of my friends were appalled at the thought of having to wear those colours. I loved it, it looked like a bunch of large fuchsias going for a walk.

I joined the local chapter on a trial basis (their description) as a way of meeting people when I moved after retirement. I attended one outing to do indoor archery which was great. I put my name down for a restaurant outing the following month & paid a deposit.
An emergency cropped up in youngest DDs family which meant I couldn't attend the meal so I emailed the organiser about a week in advance with a full explanation and apologies. I said I realised the deposit would not be refunded and that I would happily pay the balance of the cost of the meal if required.
She emailed back to say they could only accept members who were prepared to demonstrate a committment to the group and its arrangements.
I'm sure that the majority of Red Hat organisers are welcoming, friendly and sensitive. This one wasn't!!

On holiday I met a drunken group of red hatters coming out of a hotel and acting like a group of drunk women of any age.

I saw what must have been a group of Red Hatters at Leeds Bradford Airport last year - I just assumed they were just a more mature hen party. They seemed a happy bunch anyway.

Galen I am NOT a Red Hat -would never wear one. It's a social organisation started in US although some branches now in UK.

I think the Red Hats were featured in a Simpsons episode. As I recall they wanted Marge to help them steal from Mr. Burns! (Sorry that will mean nothing to those of you not into the Simpsons)
