That none of my family can read what I am saying.
That I can have a good laugh with other Gransnetters
There is someone there to respond most of the time

What do you like ?

janeainsworth Sun 09-Mar-14 19:31:37

I like hearing others' views on the issues of the day, and often people will post interesting links.

NanKate Anyone can read what you are saying but they won't that you are the one saying it unless they know who NanKate is.

…won't know that you are the one… (Wake up absent!)

Icyalittle Sun 09-Mar-14 19:47:46

I love the support, there when you need it most. (soop you know who you are!)

Brendawymms Sun 09-Mar-14 19:53:25

Love the support and the real empathy given to people who seek help.
Love knowing that there are other grans out there in the middle of the night
Love knowing I'm not alone.
Love the vicarious living I do with you all.
Love the silly chat.
Love you all flowers

Aww, that's nice Brenda we like you too.flowers
It's always good to know that others are in the 'same boat' when we have problems, because we sometimes think it's just ourselves being peculiar, when in fact it's not[or is that just me?] My paranoia is kicking in again.
Also sometimes we just need a bit of a rant [ a safe rant] or just a few tips on how to make something or where to buy something. Also to see other thoughts on a subject, it may make us change our minds [or not] but we are all allowed to have our opinions.Plus we can meet each other as well [in real life I mean] now and again for a chat, it doesn't have to be all virtual and faceless. We can cheer each other up in adversity.

I like the mindless distraction of the light hearted threads, and the mindful-Ness of the serious discussions. And I love the virtual friendship, and friends I have on here. And all the kindness that pours on to these pages.

NanKate Sun 09-Mar-14 20:51:17

Absent I haven't told anyone my name, other than one friend who showed absolutely no interest in joining.

I don't mention that I have joined Gransnet to anyone else in the family as I expect I could get a mixed response.

I suppose it could be worse I could be on a speed dating site for past it pensioners ! wink

These are a few of my favourite Gnet things:

I enjoy the silliness at times.
Fabulous advice given when asked.
Support in difficult times.
Interesting views on diverse topics.
Virtual companionship.
The kindness & compassion shown by the majority of posters.

I LIKE most of the above but curiously what I absolutely LOVE is having the opportunity to share the JOY, whether that be a new Grandchild, (particularly if there is a picture), a recovery from illness, a surprise present or party, an enjoyable holiday or experience, a picture of a sunset or the first spring flowers. When there is nothing particular to brighten my own day, I can come on to GN and find so much to be happy and hopeful about. I think of GN as a sisterhood, where we might sometimes quarrel but then make up, where we stick together if anyone threatens one of us and where we share Joys and Sorrows.

I think sometimes people are reluctant to tell us their good news in case it is seen as being boastful or inappropriate when someone else is suffering. Please do not hang back, share the JOY and spread the happiness sunshine

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 09-Mar-14 21:56:44

It's a diversion mostly. Quite pleasant when taking a break from the housework, or watching tv. Can't say I feel at all sentimental about it.

I relish the intelligent and informative posts by those who are knowledgeable about particular topics – bags with maths, Granny23 with Scottish politics (and proposed independence), Jess about biology and microbiology, a whole bunch of people with experience of teaching and running schools and another whole bunch with experience of social work and probation … and many, many more.

Love most of it!
It's probably saved my sanity and any sort of sense of humour I might have!
I was very lonely until DD having just announced she was pregnant, suggested I join!
Was a bit doubtful
But
Thank the FSM, I joined!

Gally Sun 09-Mar-14 22:25:53

All of the above.
I joined at the beginning, much to the amusement of the late Mr.G but it has been a lifesaver and I think he would think differently now.

ninathenana Sun 09-Mar-14 22:36:37

The fun, the advice, the sympathy and sharing in others news.

Bellasnana Sun 09-Mar-14 22:46:54

I was feeling quite in the doldrums due to numerous reasons with which I will not bore you, when I discovered Gransnet, but am so glad I did. You have made a world of difference to my life. I love to read what you are up to, share your joys and sorrows. Some of you have such a sense of humour and I actually laugh out loud at your witty comments. I've also had a lot of useful advice from you on various subjects.

Living abroad, I do feel homesick for the UK at times so its lovely to have a connection with those of you who are there.

Most of all, being a long-distance nana myself, it has been a great support to share the experiences of others in a similar situation.
Thank you all so much sunshine flowers

KatyK Sun 09-Mar-14 22:51:37

One word - support

POGS Sun 09-Mar-14 23:39:53

I am in the Jings camp, I don't feel particularly sentimental about GN but I do enjoy debating and discussing threads with others who have differing views.

It is interesting to read the varied posts, it keeps me informed and makes me use the 'odd' brain cell or two. I enjoy the funny, engaging posts and they keep me going and wanting to keep posting.

Humour is a personal thing and I think there are some GN's I find like minded and I enjoy the bish bash when I see a thread taking a funny turn. I like it when you see empathy shown and kindness to someone who is reaching out for advice and help.

Yes there are negatives but on the whole you are in a position to ignore them or not, as the case may be. GN has not been a life saver nor the be all end all of my world. GN has however been an interesting supplement to my day to day life and I feel benefitted by the contact it has brought me with some very interesting, intelligent, kind men and women and I feel I would be a loser if I ever stopped posting and 'lurking' on GN.

I don't think anyone has suggested that they feel sentimental about Gransnet – sad? nostalgic? over-emotional? Why on earth would they?

Lona Mon 10-Mar-14 08:30:26

I love the company any time of the day or evening, and I've learned lots of interesting stuff from members who've had very varied lives.
Lots of help too if you have a problem, and most netters are friendly and pleasant.

J52 Mon 10-Mar-14 08:47:39

I read more than post, but I like The diversity of other's opinions and experiences.

As a quite new gran, I have taken heed of some good advice.

The fun and clever comments in the light hearted threads.

Knowing that if needed there is support for everyone out there. X

glammanana Mon 10-Mar-14 09:49:03

All of the above really and the virtual friendship where you can get support more or less instantly,I love the way GN has grown from that very first day and how such a lot of topic's are discussed.
Oh and lets not forget I do love the virtual parties

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 10-Mar-14 09:57:04

That's a really good post POGS. You put it better than I did. Spot on.

dorsetpennt Mon 10-Mar-14 10:04:03

I was one of the 'gransnetters' that joined this site at its beginning. I was a prodigious contributer/commentator. IN fact being an early joiner meant I won a really super prize. However, I got fed up with some netters flying in and out with name changes because they had antagonised people. There was some fighting that became unpleasant, even some cliques funnily enough. So I dive in and out from time to time to see how things are going.
