Celebs who 'perform' at the drop of a hat!

Just reading the HIGNFY thread, mentioning John Cooper Clark, who is a performance poet. He irritated me because I just knew he would seize any opportunity to trot out one of his horrible poems, and it reminded me of those otter irritating celebs who insist on singing, dancing or whatever when they are on TV for other reasons. Lionel Blair and Brucie tapping away without invitation, Lesley Garratt screeching on Loose Women, Lulu going 'WEEEEE EEEE EEE ELLLLLL you make me wanna commit murder shout!' and all those other irritating has-beens who don't get the gigs nowadays, so hijack quizzes and chat shows. Grrrr! grin

Ahhh.....that feels better. Anyone irritate you like that?

rosesarered Sat 24-May-14 11:48:35

Oh yes! Lots. Some people only need to have a torch shone on them to start performing.
Is that who that was on HIGNFY? I thought it was Keith Richard's brother.

grin

Blimey when hope you feel better after that! Actually I agree with you. We used to have a friend who was a Shakespearean actor and he always talked to you as if he was delivering a speech from King Lear for example. Also constantly checking himself in the mirror. At a party he would chat to someone with his eyes scanning the party unless he found someone else more interesting to talk to.

I am glad that someone else does not like Leslie Garrett - I thought I was alone!

Whenim

I agree with all of your choices, they are irritating.

It's the same with TV shows that 'could' be interesting or funny. Take '8 out of ten Cats does Countdown'. They get an idiot who reckons he can't make more than a 3 letter word out of 9 or add up to the level of an 8 year old. It's not funny you have just made me switch over idiot.

Roses John Cooper Clark is a Liverpudlian performance poet who latched on to groups like the Scaffold to get on their bill, and whose Roger McGough is an excellent poet. He's about 65 now but seems to think he's still 17! His sister is Margi Clark, who was someone's (Tyrone's?) mother in Corrie. She's equally irritating! grin

I didn't know he was Margi Clark's brother. A liking for being centre of attention must run in the family then.

I still cringe when I remember Cliff Richard 'entertaining' the crowd one rainy Wimbledon .... shock

rosesarered Sat 24-May-14 15:18:34

Thanks for the info whenim. Never heard of Margi Clark[don't watch Coro. St.] but I do quite like Roger McGough. Some men never grow up, thought that John - thingy looked and sounded idiotic.

In the 1960s I was on a train in one of the old fashioned carriages where only 8 people can sit opposite each other.

There was an old chap (well I thought he was old) about 50 whose voice I recognised when he introduced himself to the carriage. He was an actor from the Archers who played one of the yokels.

He produced a whole pack of signed photos of himself and distributed them to us all quite unsolicited. No one had the guts to tell him to stick them ! hmm

.....and while I'm having a moan, what about those celeb hasbeens who come out to an introduction and 'conduct' the audience to make them cheer more? Leo Sayer (who I loved before he started to believe his own publicity) performs unprompted AND makes the audience cheer for him. Simon Cowell does it, so do Chris de Burgh, Peter Kay, Tony Hadley and (disappointing) Mick Jagger has started doing it. Mick - a tip - you don't need to ask for applause, you've still got it!

There (brushes hands brusquely) - I think that's enough for one day grin

NanKate Sat 24-May-14 15:31:29

Why do all these so called stars clap themselves when being introduced ?

Maggiemaybe Sat 24-May-14 15:42:50

Oh dear. I enjoyed John Cooper Clark's appearance on HIGNFY last night - I've just told my daughter how funny the show was. Am I in a minority of one (not for the first time)? smile

Agree with all on your list When but my list would also include Paul McCartney. He was my favourite Beatle but now, I cringe when he 'performs'

I do wish Lulu would make up her mind though as to what her accent is, sometimes very English or a ridiculous put on broad Glasgow.

NanKate I think the clapping thing is another American import!

annsixty Sat 24-May-14 15:55:29

Oh how I agree about Paul Mcartney. His performance, which I think could have been at theQueen's Jubilee, was so cringe worthy. Some do not know when the time comes to go.

Maggiemaybe Sat 24-May-14 16:01:05

Oh, now I definitely agree that Macca should keep his light under a bushel these days!

Riverwalk Sat 24-May-14 16:04:05

The Clarke's must be a split/blended family - JCC is a Mancunian and Margi is definitely Scouse!

I've only seen her in Letter to Brezhnev - anyone remember that film?

Ana Sat 24-May-14 16:12:01

Margi Clarke is not JCC's sister! confused

whenim64 Sat 24-May-14 16:14:20

You've made me wonder now, Riverwalk she said he's her brother on an interview I saw ages ago, but perhaps it was her Scouse sense of humour at work.

Yes, Ive seen Letter to Breshnev. It was a good film.
