I am fuming steam is actually rising from me will all the Government and NICE bods please give me a break. Yes I drink red wine and I do it daily but does anyone care to research why I do it - DH -Stroke - 3 family bereavements in less than one year 2 of which were devastating. Give me a break and get off my back

whenim64 Tue 15-Jul-14 18:26:31

Just wait a few days, sparkygran. Some more research will pop up to show the correlation between red wine drinking and centenarians grin

Galen Tue 15-Jul-14 18:34:40

I'm not giving up! wine

grannyactivist Tue 15-Jul-14 18:35:18

sparky by name AND nature today I see. hmm
I think you're in desperate need of some TLC; so (((hugs))), cupcake, sunshine, flowers and just a small glass of wine or wine wine.

merlotgran Tue 15-Jul-14 18:38:31

Give up??? I'd have to change my name. wine grin

Smoothiegran does have a certain Je ne sais quoi about it though hmm

whitewave Tue 15-Jul-14 18:51:01

my 96 year old mother has a couple of sherries everyday and sometimes wine with her meal. What nonsense we are being bombarded with.

sparkygran Tue 15-Jul-14 19:02:50

You have no idea how much this means to me I really am not an alcoholic but increasingly I am being made to feel one. You have no idea grannyactivist and merlotgran I related to you from the off. Galen welcome to my world.

Iam64 Tue 15-Jul-14 19:06:29

Go sparkygran, and all the jolly posters here. I was also cross to read this latest information. Leave us alone I shout. grin wine

MiceElf Tue 15-Jul-14 19:17:36

On another thread I quoted St Paul:

Take a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.

So there, you have it on the best authority!

sparkygran Tue 15-Jul-14 19:25:27

I am in your debt MiceElf I will quote that to my dearly beloved

Nanalogue Tue 15-Jul-14 19:59:41

We're all with you sparky! I can't give you any lofty quotes, but we have a very close friend who is a GP (in the medical sense) and he says these guidelines are a "load of boll**ks", he and his DOH drink way more than the recommended (oops, nearly said 'dose') amount. I don't want to drink water and live on mung beans and tofu either! Life's too short. Hugs.

Ana Tue 15-Jul-14 20:02:21

Well said, Nanalogue!

rosequartz Tue 15-Jul-14 22:18:30

This may cheer you up, sparky

Cheers wine

Galen Tue 15-Jul-14 22:36:55

Micelf
He only said a little though!
I like a lot!

He also said "wives, be obedient to your husbands'

Some hope, never when he was alive.

rosequartz Tue 15-Jul-14 22:55:11

St Paul the misogynist probably only gave that advice to men, not women.

rosequartz Tue 15-Jul-14 22:56:12

Re having a tipple I mean.

Galen Tue 15-Jul-14 22:58:56

hmm just wondered for a minute.
Does that mean he meant women could drink a lot?

rosequartz Tue 15-Jul-14 23:10:33

grin women, that insignificant half of the human race, were probably not meant to drink at all!

I suppose if they were always the ones serving the wine they could sneak as much as they liked? hmm

Crafting Tue 15-Jul-14 23:11:33

DH and I share a bottle of red every day. I'm not much of a spirit drinker but if you try and get my wine off me you'd have a real battle on your hands angry Personally sparkygran I think it does you good to have a glass or two to unwind and you seem to have had a lot to cope with this year. Here have one of these wine and another wine and I will join you. P.S they are big glasses not little ones !

Galen Tue 15-Jul-14 23:18:50

Hear, hear!
I'm fed up of 'them up there' who keep telling us how to live.
I'm an Epicurean not a Stoic!
As far as Diogenes is concerned, the best use for a barrel is to mature wine in it!

absent Tue 15-Jul-14 23:43:43

I am also fed up with being told what to eat and drink and what not to eat and drink - especially as the advice changes slightly less frequently than I change my socks. A wide variety and everything in moderation seems pretty much okay to me. I think governments do this - the one where I live does it too - in lieu of having to do something or admit something that really is their business.

Nanalogue Wed 16-Jul-14 08:32:54

Yeah, leave us alone! Rose could you find me a quote that recommends Sauvignon Blanc please? Preferably NZ. Ta.

KatyK Wed 16-Jul-14 09:53:39

Sparky - When my DH was in a very stressful job he began to get chest pains. He went to his GP who said it was stress related and told him to have 'a couple of whiskies' in the evening. As he doesn't like whiskey, he substituted this for red wine or a couple of G&Ts, it helped him. I probably drink more that is good for me - my life has been (and still is) pretty difficult. OK some might say it's a crutch, well sometimes I need a crutch - there I've said it. wine

My Great Aunt's DiL's family owned one of the distilleries in Scotland and had a crate of Glen........ delivered to her every Christmas. She never offered anyone a glass, so presumably drank the lot over the course of the year grin She lived until she was 99 and survived an accident (not drink related!!) when she was in her 90s, which involved almost 200 stitches in her face, head and body, so she did all right!

I suppose the anti-drink lobby could argue that, if she didn't drink, she may have lived to be 150 . . . grin

Anne58 Wed 16-Jul-14 12:23:59

Nanalogue that's my favourite too! The Nobilo Limited Release is lovely, but we only buy it when it's on offer. (Personally I prefer it to The Ned)

However I have recently discovered that the Lidl NZ Sauvignon Blanc at £5.89 is very good, much better then their French one.
